Porcelain is the toughest choice for floors, wet areas and outdoors, ceramic is the economical choice for walls and light-use floors and natural stone tiles suit lounges and entrances. Choose by place, budget and how much maintenance you accept. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.

Indicative ranges are PKR 120 to 450 for basic ceramic, about PKR 150 to 185 for mid-range 600 x 600 mm porcelain-type floor tiles, PKR 600 to 2,200 for granite tiles and PKR 1,000 to 3,000 or more for imported porcelain and marble. Labour is extra.

Laying labour is commonly PKR 40 to 100 per sq ft depending on the tile size, the pattern and the city, and adhesive, grout and wastage are extra. Our rates page uses about PKR 260 per sq ft tiled for kitchens and bathrooms, within PKR 180 to 450.

Porcelain is denser, harder and absorbs very little water, which suits floors, bathrooms and outdoor areas. Ceramic costs less and suits walls and light-traffic floors. In wet or outdoor places, porcelain with a suitable anti-slip finish is the safer choice. Prices and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Measure the area, divide by the coverage of a box and add wastage, commonly about 5 to 10 per cent for straight laying and more for diagonal patterns or small rooms. Buy all boxes of one batch together so the shade and size stay consistent.
