Ceramic Tiles: Glazed Wall and Floor Types, Strength, Uses and Indicative Prices

Ceramic tiles are the most widely used tiles in Pakistani homes, valued for the range of designs and the lower price. They are made from clay and fired with a glazed surface, and they suit walls and light-use floors well. They absorb more water and chip more easily than porcelain, so the choice of place matters. This guide covers types, strength, uses, care and indicative prices. For the denser alternative, see porcelain tiles.

What these tiles are

A these tiles has a clay body and a glazed face that carries the colour and the design. The body is more porous than porcelain, so ceramic suits dry and lightly used areas best. The glaze decides how hard-wearing the surface is.

Wall and floor ceramic

Wall ceramic is lighter and thinner and is not meant for floors. Floor ceramic is harder and has a stronger glaze. Check the box to see which use the tile is made for.

Where ceramic suits

Use ceramic on walls in kitchens and bathrooms, and on floors in bedrooms and lightly used rooms. For wet floors, car porches and outdoor areas, porcelain is the stronger choice.

Care

Clean with a mild cleaner, avoid harsh acids on grout and protect the glaze from dragged furniture. Seal grout lines in wet areas. See grout for care.

Ceramic or porcelain

Ceramic costs less and offers many designs, and porcelain is harder and absorbs very little water. Choose porcelain for floors in wet or heavy-use areas, and ceramic where cost matters and the use is light.

Yes on the walls, and for floors with an anti-slip finish in light-use bathrooms. For wet floors and heavy use, porcelain with a suitable grip is more durable. Waterproof the base and seal grout in all wet areas. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

Indicative prices are about PKR 120 to 450 per sq ft for basic ceramic wall and floor tiles, with laying at PKR 40 to 100 per sq ft. Prices vary with the series, size and finish, so confirm current rates. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.

Only in sheltered places and with tiles made for floors and grip. Most outdoor areas, car porches and steps need porcelain or stone with an anti-slip finish, because ceramic can chip and absorb water. Check the rating on the box.

Check whether the tile is for wall or floor, look at the grade, size and shade batch, and lay samples side by side. Choose anti-slip finishes for wet floors, and buy a little extra for repairs from the same batch. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

Send the room size, the tile size you prefer and a photo of the space on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the tile, the boxes needed with wastage and the adhesive and grout, so you can compare quotes on the same scope.
