How the quantities are derived
Each material is estimated from a per-square-foot coefficient applied to your covered area, then a wastage allowance is added on top. As a rule of thumb for a standard grey structure, budget around 0.4 bags of cement, 3.2 kg of steel and 8.5 bricks per square foot of covered area, plus sand and crush for concrete and mortar. These are planning coefficients for a typical residential build; a heavily reinforced design, a basement or long spans will use more steel and concrete, so treat the output as a procurement guide rather than a structural take-off.
Why a wastage allowance matters
Real sites never use exactly the theoretical quantity. Cement is lost to spillage and over-rich mixes, steel to offcuts and laps, bricks to breakage in handling. The calculator adds a standard wastage allowance so your order reflects what actually gets consumed, not the paper minimum. On cut and brittle materials it is always cheaper to order a small margin up front than to place an urgent top-up order mid-pour at a worse rate. For steel and cement especially, buying the bulk of the requirement in one go also protects you from price movement during the build.

Heavy materials — sand, crush and bricks — carry a large transport share, so the delivered price depends heavily on your distance from the source; the city selector adjusts the estimate for that.
