Kitchen Countertops in Pakistan: Granite, Quartz, Solid Surface and Laminate
Kitchen countertops take heat, knives, water and stains every day, so the material matters more than the colour. This guide compares granite, marble, quartz, solid surface, laminate and steel on durability, upkeep and cost level, explains thickness and edges, how the sink and hob cut-outs work and what to ask before you order. For the cabinets underneath, see our kitchen cabinets guide.
Countertop materials compared
Each material trades looks, toughness and upkeep.
| Material | Strengths | Limits | Upkeep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Granite | Hard, heat-tolerant, natural | Needs sealing, seams show | Seal periodically |
| Marble | Classic look | Stains and etches with acids | High; avoid acids |
| Quartz (engineered) | Non-porous, uniform | Can mark with very hot pans | Low |
| Solid surface (Corian-type) | Seamless, repairable | Softer; scratches can be sanded | Low to medium |
| Laminate or HPL | Budget, many looks | Edges and heat are weak points | Low |
| Stainless steel | Hygienic, heat-proof | Shows scratches | Low |

Thickness and edges
Countertops are commonly 20 to 30 mm thick, with thicker mitred edges for a heavier look. Edge profiles from square to rounded change how the counter looks and how well it resists chipping. Ask for the thickness and edge in writing, and check the cabinets can carry the weight of stone.
Sink and hob cut-outs
Choose the sink and hob before the counter is cut. Undermount sinks need a polished edge on the cut-out, and the hob needs a clear margin for heat and hoses. Our guides to kitchen sinks and hobs help you choose.

Heat, stains and scratches
Use trivets under hot pans even on heat-tolerant stone, wipe acids and oils quickly from marble and sealed granite, and use boards instead of cutting on the surface. Clean with mild soap, avoid abrasive pads and reseal natural stone as recommended. Wipe up spills of tea, juice and oil quickly, because even sealed stone can stain if a spill sits for hours, and keep chopping boards and trivets close to the cooking area so protecting the top becomes automatic.
Joints, backsplash and fitting
Seams are unavoidable on long runs, so ask where they will fall and how they are finished. A backsplash or upstand protects the wall. The cabinets must be level before fitting, and a template taken on site gives the best fit.
Choosing by budget and use
- Tight budget: laminate or HPL with good edge sealing.
- Heavy cooking: granite or stainless steel.
- Low upkeep, modern look: quartz.
- Seamless look and easy repair: solid surface.

Frequently Asked Questions
Granite and quartz suit heavy cooking because they tolerate heat and daily use well, solid surface suits seamless looks and easy repair, and laminate suits tight budgets. Marble looks classic but stains with acids and oils. Choose by how you cook and how much upkeep you accept.
Quartz is engineered, non-porous and uniform, so it needs little care, while granite is natural, very hard and heat-tolerant but needs sealing. Very hot pans can mark quartz, and granite varies slab to slab. Choose by look, upkeep and budget, and view full slabs.
Commonly around 20 to 30 mm, with thicker mitred edges for a bulkier look. Thicker stone is heavier and costs more, so the cabinets must carry the weight. Ask the supplier to state the thickness and edge profile in writing before you approve the template.
Use trivets even on heat-tolerant materials. Granite and stainless steel handle heat best, quartz and solid surface can be damaged by very hot pans, and laminate can scorch or blister. Protecting the surface costs nothing, avoids marks and keeps the top looking new for many more years, so make a trivet a habit.
Natural stone such as granite and marble needs sealing at installation and again periodically to resist stains, while quartz and solid surface usually do not. Follow the supplier's care instructions and wipe spills quickly, especially acids and oils on marble. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
