Corian Countertops: Solid Surface Tops, Seamless Joins and Care
Corian countertops are made from solid surface, an acrylic or polyester resin material that can be joined without visible seams and shaped into integrated sinks and curved edges. Corian is a brand name that people often use for solid surface in general. This guide explains what it is, where it works, its limits on heat and scratches, how repairs work and how it compares with stone. For the full range of materials, see kitchen countertops.
What solid surface is
Solid surface is a manufactured sheet material, the same colour all the way through, that can be cut, joined and thermoformed. Joints are bonded and sanded so the top looks like one piece. The brand name Corian is widely used for it, and other makers sell similar products.
Strengths
The main benefits are a seamless look, an integrated sink and splashback with no crevices, and the ability to repair scratches by sanding because the colour runs through. The surface is non-porous, so it resists stains and bacteria when cleaned properly.

Limits to know
It is softer than quartz and granite, so it scratches more easily, though scratches can be repaired. Very hot pans can scorch it, so use trivets. Dark colours show wear more. Ask the fitter about seam positions and the support needed under long spans.
Where it works
It suits modern kitchens, vanities, reception desks and curved or feature counters where seamless joins matter. For heavy cooking and a natural look, compare with granite and quartz in our countertop guide.
Fitting and care
A template is taken on site, the top is fabricated and bonded, and the seams are finished in place. Clean with mild soap, avoid harsh solvents and use boards and trivets. Light scratches and marks can be restored by a technician.
Thickness and edges
Common thicknesses are around 12 mm for the sheet, built up to a thicker edge for a heavier look. Edges can be square, rounded or profiled. Ask for the sheet thickness, the build-up and the support spacing in writing.
How we quote
Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions
Corian countertops are made from a solid surface material, the same colour right through, that can be joined without visible seams and moulded into integrated sinks. Corian is a brand name often used for solid surface in general. The surface is non-porous and repairable by sanding.
Not fully. Very hot pans can scorch or mark solid surface, so use trivets under hot cookware. Granite and stainless steel tolerate heat better. If you cook with heavy, very hot pans, protect the surface or choose a more heat-tolerant material. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.
Yes. Because the colour runs through the material, light scratches and marks can be sanded out and re-polished by a technician, which is a major advantage over laminate. Deep damage may need a section replaced and the seam finished again. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.
They suit different needs. Solid surface gives seamless joins, integrated sinks and repairability, while quartz is harder and more scratch and heat tolerant. Choose solid surface for looks and seamless design, and quartz where toughness matters most. View both materials in full-size samples, and ask the supplier about seam positions, warranty and who completes the repairs if a surface is damaged later.
The surface is non-porous, so most stains wipe off, but strong dyes and harsh chemicals can mark it if left. Clean spills promptly with mild soap, and avoid solvents. Stubborn marks can usually be removed by sanding the surface lightly. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
