Standard sizes
Common handmade steel sinks are about 24 x 18 in (roughly 60 x 45 cm) for a single bowl and around 30 to 32 in long for a double bowl, with larger drainboard models above that. The base cabinet must be wide enough, and the cut-out is taken from the sink's template. Confirm the outer size, bowl depth and drain position before the countertop is cut.

Material and gauge
Stainless steel is the practical choice: it is hygienic, heat-tolerant and affordable. Grade 304 resists rust better than lower grades, and a thicker gauge dents less and is quieter under running water. Granite composite and ceramic sinks look different but cost more and are heavier. Ask for the grade and thickness in writing.
Drainboard, depth and accessories
A drainboard saves counter space for drying, a deeper bowl hides mess and a basket strainer and waste fittings should come in the box. Soundproofing pads reduce the drumming of a thin sink. Cutting boards and colanders that sit on the sink rim add function.
Fitting with the countertop
