MDF Kitchen Cabinets: Boards, Moisture Grades, Finishes and Wooden Alternatives
MDF kitchen cabinets are the most common choice in Pakistan because the board is smooth, stable and takes many finishes at a fair price. They are also the cabinets most damaged by water, so the grade of the board and the sealing of every edge decide how long they last. This guide explains the board grades, the finishes, how solid wood and plywood compare, how to protect cabinets near the sink and what to check. For the boards themselves, see MDF and HPL sheets.
Board grades for kitchens
Choose the board by position in the kitchen.
| Board | Strengths | Limits | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard MDF | Smooth, stable, low cost | Swells when wet | Wall units, dry runs |
| Moisture-resistant MDF | Slower water uptake | Still needs sealed edges | Base units |
| HDHMR | Dense, moisture tolerant, strong screw hold | Heavier, costs more | Sink-area bases, drawers |
| Plywood | Strong, repairable | Quality varies by grade | Carcasses and shelves |
| Solid wood | Premium, repairable | Moves with humidity | Doors and frames |
See HDHMR sheets and MDF vs plywood.

Finishes: laminate, acrylic, UV and veneer
Laminate is cost-effective and hard-wearing. Acrylic and UV finishes are glossy and modern, and veneer gives real wood grain. See cabinet sheets and doors for the options and lamination sheets for laminates.
Edges are where water gets in
MDF fails at the edges and the bottom. Ask for fully banded edges, a sealed bottom and a plinth that keeps the base off the floor. Seal every cut, including cut-outs for the sink and hob, and silicone the joint at the sink.

Wooden kitchen cabinets
Solid wood and veneered doors give a premium look and can be refinished, but they move with humidity and cost more. A common approach is a moisture-resistant carcass with wooden or veneered doors. Seal all faces so moisture cannot enter from one side.
Hardware matters
Choose soft-close hinges and drawer channels rated for the load. Cheap hardware spoils good boards. See kitchen drawers for drawer systems.
Care and signs of trouble
Wipe spills immediately, avoid standing water under the sink and check the base after leaks. Swollen edges, bubbling laminate and a musty smell are signs of moisture. Fix the leak and replace damaged parts early.
How we quote
Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions
They are good value for dry areas and wall units and offer many finishes, but standard MDF swells if water reaches the core. Use moisture-resistant MDF or HDHMR for base units near the sink, band every edge and seal cut-outs, and keep the base off wet floors.
HDHMR is a denser, moisture-tolerant board with better screw hold, while standard MDF is smoother and cheaper but absorbs water more easily. HDHMR costs more and is heavier. It is a good choice for base units, sink areas and drawers. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.
Plywood is strong and repairable, but quality varies widely by grade and glue, and it moves with moisture. Good moisture-resistant MDF and HDHMR offer smooth faces and stable sizes. The best choice depends on the grade you can actually buy and the finish you want.
Use moisture-resistant board near the sink, fully band and seal every edge and cut-out, silicone the sink joint, raise the base on a plinth and wipe spills quickly. Check under the sink regularly for leaks, since a slow leak ruins a base unit.
Laminate and HPL are durable and cost-effective, acrylic and UV finishes give a glossy modern look and veneer gives real wood grain. Choose by wear and cleaning habits, and check the edge banding and bonding quality, since those decide how the doors age.
