Wall Moulding Designs: Types, Materials and Where to Use Them

Wall moulding (also spelled molding) is the shaped trim that gives a plain room structure: frames on a feature wall, a cornice where the wall meets the ceiling, a skirting at the base and neat edges around doors. This hub explains the main wall moulding designs, how the materials compare and how to plan a layout, and it links to our detailed guides on skirting, French frames, panel moulding and PVC. Many projects combine it with our wall panels.

What moulding does for a room

Moulding is decorative and practical at the same time. It adds shadow lines that make flat walls look tailored, it hides the joint where two surfaces meet, and it protects edges that would otherwise chip and scuff. A room with the right trim looks finished even when the paint and furniture are simple.

Most of it falls into four jobs: framing a wall, finishing the ceiling edge, edging doors and openings, and protecting the base of the wall. The sections below take each in turn.

Moulding types and where each one goes

The names vary by seller, but the types are consistent.

Our guides cover the most common ones in depth: wall panel moulding for frame layouts and skirting for the base of the wall.

PVC, PU, MDF or wood: choosing the material

The material matters more than the profile in damp or high-use rooms. PVC does not absorb water and is light enough to fix with adhesive. PU (polyurethane) is moulded into ornate profiles and curves. MDF takes paint beautifully but swells if it gets wet. Wood gives a rich finish but needs sealing and costs more. Availability of each profile varies, so ask us what we can supply for your project.

Wall moulding designs: frames and panels

Framed walls are the most requested use. Slim strips are fixed in rectangles on a plain wall, and the whole wall, frames included, is usually painted one colour. A single box per bay is modern and simple; a double line with a thin inner frame is the classic look; tall stacked frames draw the eye up in low rooms; and a flat panel or fabric inside each frame adds contrast.

Two pages go deeper. French wall moulding covers the classic box-frame style for bedrooms, lounges and offices, and wall panel moulding gives layout rules for frame size, spacing and a worked example. For a wider range of ideas, read our wall panel design guide.

Cornices and ceiling borders

A cornice softens the corner where wall meets ceiling and hides small gaps against an uneven wall. In PVC ceilings, a matching trim closes the edge neatly; see our ceiling range for the panels and PVC ceiling panels for the panel side of the job. A wider, stepped cornice suits a tall lounge; a slim flat one suits a low bedroom ceiling. Fix it with a helper, since long lengths bend under their own weight.

Door frames and the edge of an opening

Around a door, moulding finishes the gap between the frame and the wall. It also pairs with the skirting: the skirting usually stops against the door casing, so choose both together to avoid awkward joints. Plain, slightly stepped profiles suit modern doors, and fuller profiles suit panelled doors. Painting the casing the same colour as the skirting makes the doorway look planned.

Skirting boards and tile skirting

Skirting is the moulding that takes the most abuse, so material choice matters: tile or PVC in wet areas, MDF or wood in dry rooms. Heights of roughly 4 to 6 inches are common, taller in formal rooms. Our skirting guide covers heights, colours, how to calculate the length you need, and how to keep the floor joint watertight.

Choosing the profile, size and colour

Three rules cover most decisions. Match the profile to the scale of the room: slim for small rooms and low ceilings, wider for tall walls. Keep one profile family through the room, so cornice, frames and skirting feel related. And paint trim and wall in the same colour for a calm look, or the trim a shade lighter for definition. Always check a sample in your own daylight, and plan the layout on paper before you buy.

Fitting basics and mistakes to avoid

  • Level first: mark lines with a spirit level, not by eye.
  • Mitre the corners at 45 degrees and dry-fit before gluing.
  • Prepare the wall: clean, dry, and fully cured plaster.
  • Fill and finish: fill joints, then paint once the adhesive has set.
  • Avoid joints mid-wall: plan lengths so joins fall in corners.

The general fitting process for panels and trims is in our installation guide.

How moulding is priced

Moulding is priced per running foot and depends on profile width, material and finish, and fitting is quoted per job. We do not publish fixed figures because they change often; send the wall size and a photo on WhatsApp and we will quote.

Wall Moulding: Frequently Asked Questions

Wall moulding frames feature walls, finishes the ceiling edge, edges doors and openings and protects the base of the wall as skirting. It adds shadow lines and structure to a plain room and hides the joints between surfaces, which is why a trimmed room looks finished.

PVC is best in damp rooms and for ceilings, MDF and wood suit dry rooms that will be painted, and PU suits ornate profiles. Choose by room humidity, budget and finish. Send a photo and we will suggest one for your wall.

Yes, and that is the classic approach. Painting trim and wall in one colour gives a calm, tailored look, while a trim a shade lighter adds definition. Prepare the surface and use a suitable primer on PVC, and test the colour in daylight first.

Measure the wall, choose an odd number of frames, keep every gap equal and match frame height to the furniture. Mark the lines with a spirit level first. Our panel moulding guide has a worked example for a 10 ft wall.

Skirting is one type of moulding, the strip at the base of the wall. Moulding in general also covers frames on the wall, cornices at the ceiling and casings around doors. They are usually chosen together as one family, so the profiles match across the room.

Yes, with PVC or tile-based trims that do not absorb water. Avoid MDF in wet areas, where it swells. Seal joints and use moisture-rated adhesive. For shower walls, pair trims with waterproof PVC panels, and keep every edge sealed against water.
