Outdoor Tiles: Anti-Slip Porcelain, Stone and Terracotta for Terraces and Gardens
Outdoor tiles must handle rain, sun, dirt and foot traffic without becoming slippery or cracking. Porcelain with an anti-slip finish is the most reliable choice, and natural stone and terracotta add character when sealed and cared for. The base, the slope and the adhesive decide how long an outdoor floor lasts. This guide covers types, slip ratings, thickness, drainage, fixing and care. For vehicle areas, see car porch tiles.
Types of outdoor tile
Choose by use and style.
| Type | Strengths | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-slip porcelain | Durable, low absorption, grip | Best all-round choice |
| Stone and travertine | Natural look | Seal; choose a grippy finish |
| Terracotta | Warm, rustic | Seal and maintain |
| Concrete and cement tiles | Economical | Check quality and sealing |

Slip ratings and finish
Choose textured or structured surfaces and check the slip rating on the box. Polished tiles are slippery outdoors. See porcelain tiles.
Thickness, frost and heat
Choose tiles with low water absorption and a suitable weather rating. Dark tiles heat up in strong sun, so light and mid tones are cooler underfoot.
Slope and drainage
Slope the surface slightly away from walls to drains, so water does not pool. Plan the falls and channels before tiling, and leave movement joints in large areas. Large terraces need movement joints about every few metres and at the edge of the slab, filled with flexible sealant, so expansion in summer heat does not lift tiles. Fix tiles over a sound, cured base with a full bed of adhesive, since hollow spots under outdoor tiles collect water and crack. Where a terrace sits over a living room, check the waterproofing before tiling. Buy a few spare boxes from the same batch. Walk the finished floor after rain to spot any pooling, and fix low spots early, because standing water leaves stains and invites moss.
Fixing and care
Use exterior adhesive with full coverage and exterior grout, and seal natural stone. Clean regularly, remove moss and keep drains clear. See tile adhesive and bond.

How we quote
Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions
Anti-slip porcelain is the most reliable, because it absorbs very little water, handles sun and rain and can have a textured surface. Natural stone and terracotta suit some styles when sealed and cared for. Check the slip and weather ratings. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
Usually not. Indoor tiles may be too smooth, too absorbent and too thin for outdoor use, and they can become slippery and crack. Choose tiles rated for exterior use with an anti-slip finish and suitable adhesive. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.
A textured, structured or matte surface and a stated slip rating. Polished tiles are slippery outdoors, especially when wet. Check the rating on the box and, if possible, test a sample wet with a shoe. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.
Yes, a gentle fall away from walls to drains so water does not pool, which causes slipping and damage. Plan the falls and drains before tiling, and leave movement joints in large areas to avoid cracking. Prices and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.
Sweep and wash regularly, remove moss and algae early, keep drains clear and reseal natural stone as advised. Check joints each year and repair cracked grout or sealant before water gets underneath. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
Send the room size, the tile size you prefer and a photo of the space on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the tile, the boxes needed with wastage and the adhesive and grout, so you can compare quotes on the same scope.
