Tile Adhesive and Bond: Types, Coverage, Thin-Bed Fixing and Choosing for Each Job

Tile adhesive is the layer that holds the tile to the wall or floor, and its strength and flexibility decide whether tiles stay put for decades. The right adhesive depends on the tile, the base and the place: dense porcelain, large formats, exteriors and wet rooms all need stronger, more flexible bonds than small wall tiles. This guide covers types, coverage, thin-bed and thick-bed fixing and how to match tile adhesive to the job. It sits with our other tile accessories.

Types of tile adhesive

Match the adhesive to the tile

Dense porcelain absorbs little water, so it needs an improved adhesive that bonds to a smooth back. Large tiles and tiles outside need flexible adhesive. See porcelain tiles and outdoor tiles.

Thin-bed and thick-bed fixing

Thin-bed fixing uses a notched trowel on a flat base and gives the strongest bond. Thick-bed fixing, also called sand-cement fixing, is traditional, and it suits uneven bases but needs more skill. Avoid hollow spots by back-buttering large tiles.

Coverage per bag

Coverage depends on the trowel notch, the base and the tile back, so use the maker's figure and add a margin. Larger tiles need a larger notch and a deeper bed. A flat base uses less adhesive.

Wet areas and exteriors

In showers and outdoors, waterproof the base, use a flexible adhesive and leave movement joints. See exterior elevation tiles.

Preparing the base

The base must be clean, sound, flat and free of dust and curing compounds. Damp or weak plaster fails. Prime absorbent bases, and wait for screeds and plaster to cure before tiling.

Price note

Adhesive is priced by type and bag size. We do not publish a verified price list, so confirm the rate with your tile quote on WhatsApp. For tile prices, see floor tiles price.

How we quote

Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions

An improved, polymer-modified adhesive, and a flexible one for large formats, because porcelain absorbs very little water and needs a strong bond to its smooth back. Back-butter large tiles and use the correct notch trowel. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.

It depends on the trowel notch, the base and the tile, so use the maker's coverage per bag and add a margin. Large tiles need a deeper bed than small ones, and uneven bases use more adhesive. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

Yes, with an exterior-grade flexible adhesive suited to weather and movement. Waterproof the base, leave movement joints and seal the edges, because water behind tiles is the main cause of outdoor failure. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering. Prices and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Thin-bed uses a notched trowel on a flat base with a thin layer of adhesive and gives the strongest bond. Thick-bed uses a sand-cement bed, suits uneven bases and needs more skill. Large tiles are better fixed with thin-bed and back-buttering. Prices and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Common causes are the wrong adhesive, a dusty or damp base, hollow spots from poor coverage, missing movement joints and water reaching the bond. Prepare the base, match the adhesive to the tile and check coverage by lifting a tile during fixing. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

Send the room size, the tile size you prefer and a photo of the space on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the tile, the boxes needed with wastage and the adhesive and grout, so you can compare quotes on the same scope.
