Exterior Elevation Tiles: Weather Ratings, Fixing, Movement Joints and Maintenance
Exterior elevation tiles live in sun, rain, dust and temperature swings, so the technical details matter more than the pattern: water absorption, weather rating, adhesive, movement joints and the sealing of edges. This guide covers what to check on the tile, how exterior tiles are fixed, why movement joints matter and how to maintain the facade. It supports our elevation tiles design guide.
What to check on the tile
Choose tiles with low water absorption, such as porcelain, and a weather or frost rating suited to your climate. Check the thickness and the weight for the wall.
Adhesive and fixing
Use an exterior-grade adhesive suited to the tile and the wall, and for tall or heavy tiles add mechanical support. Back-butter large tiles and keep joints open for movement. See tile adhesive and bond.
Movement joints and sealing
Leave movement joints at corners, openings and at regular intervals so expansion does not crack tiles. Seal the top edge and the joints so water does not enter behind the tiles.

Maintenance
Wash with water and a soft brush, remove moss, check joints and sealant yearly and repair cracked sealant promptly. Replace damaged tiles before water gets behind them.

How we quote
Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions
Low water absorption, such as porcelain, a weather or frost rating suited to the climate, adequate thickness and a surface that handles heat. Check the specification on the box and use exterior-grade adhesive and sealing. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
Common causes are missing movement joints, poor adhesive, water getting behind the tiles and temperature swings. Plan movement joints, use exterior-grade adhesive, seal the top edge and avoid fixing tiles to a damp or weak wall. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.
Yes. Leave movement joints at corners, openings and at regular intervals, filled with flexible sealant, so expansion and contraction do not crack the tiles. A skilled installer plans these before tiling starts. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.
Wash with water and a soft brush, remove moss, check the joints and sealant every year and repair cracked sealant early. Replace damaged tiles before water gets behind them and causes more damage.
Indicative ranges are about PKR 120 to 450 per sq ft for basic ceramic and porcelain-type tiles and PKR 600 to 2,200 for granite and stone-look specialty tiles, with laying at PKR 40 to 100 per sq ft. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
