The simple size rule
A common rule is to add the room's length and width in feet and use that number in inches as the chandelier's diameter. A 12 x 14 ft room adds to 26, so a chandelier of about 26 in suits it. It is a starting point, and style and ceiling height adjust it.
| Room size | Length plus width | Chandelier diameter |
|---|---|---|
| 10 x 12 ft | 22 | About 22 in |
| 12 x 14 ft | 26 | About 26 in |
| 14 x 16 ft | 30 | About 30 in |
| 16 x 20 ft | 36 | About 36 in |
A starting guide. Adjust for the ceiling height and the look you want.

Sizing over a dining table
Over a table, aim for a chandelier about half to two-thirds of the table's width and centre it on the table, not the room. A long table suits a linear fixture or two pendants, and a round table suits a round chandelier.
Hanging height over a table
Hang the bottom about 30 to 36 in above the tabletop, so you can see across the table without glare. With higher ceilings, hang slightly higher and use a longer chain, and with lower ceilings, use a flush or semi-flush fixture. See pendant lights for lower options.
Height in halls and living rooms
Where people walk, keep the bottom at least about 7 ft above the floor, and more in double-height spaces. For a standard 9 to 10 ft ceiling, a chandelier with a modest drop works, and for 12 ft or more you can use a long drop and a larger fixture.

Ceiling height limits
On low ceilings, a large chandelier feels heavy and can be a head hazard. Choose a flat, semi-flush design and keep the diameter in proportion. See modern chandeliers for slimmer shapes and room chandeliers for each room.
Weight and fixing
Ask for the weight and fix a heavy chandelier to the slab or a strong frame with a rated hook and a safety wire. Do not rely on a false ceiling board alone. Plan the position and wiring before the false ceiling closes, as in our chandelier buying guide.
Light level and dimming
A chandelier is decorative light, so add ceiling lights or wall lights and put the chandelier on a dimmer. Choose warm LED bulbs; see chandelier light.
Common mistakes
- Centring on the room, not the table.
- Hanging too low, blocking views.
- Too big for a low ceiling.
- Weak fixing for a heavy fixture.
- No dimmer or general light.
Worked examples
Take a 12 x 14 ft living room with a 10 ft ceiling: the length-plus-width rule gives about 26 in, and hanging the bottom around 7 ft from the floor leaves a comfortable 3 ft of drop from the ceiling. For a dining table 4 ft wide, a chandelier of about 24 to 32 in suits, hung 30 to 36 in above the table. For a double-height hall, a much larger fixture on a long drop reads well from both levels. Always mock up the size with a cardboard circle or a balloon before ordering.Cleaning and access
Plan how you will clean and change bulbs. A chandelier in a double-height space may need a scaffold or a lowering winch, and a heavy crystal piece is hard to handle. Leave space to work around the fixture, switch off at the breaker before cleaning and use a stable ladder.Frequently Asked Questions
Add the room's length and width in feet and use the total as the chandelier diameter in inches, so a 12 x 14 ft room suits about 26 in. Over a table, choose about half to two-thirds of the table's width, and adjust for the ceiling height.
About 30 to 36 in above the tabletop, so you can see across the table without glare. With a higher ceiling, hang it a little higher, and with a low ceiling, choose a flush or semi-flush design instead of a long drop. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.
Keep the bottom at least about 7 ft above the floor where people walk, and more in a double-height space so it is seen from both levels. Plan a strong fixing and a safe way to reach the chandelier for cleaning and bulb changes.
A small, flat or semi-flush chandelier can work, but a large hanging one will feel heavy and may be a head hazard. Choose a slim design in proportion to the room, and keep at least about 7 ft clear below in walking areas.
Yes, especially heavy ones. Fix to the slab or a strong frame with a rated hook and a safety wire, and do not rely on a false ceiling board alone. Ask for the weight, and plan the position and wiring before the ceiling closes.
