Chandelier Light: Bulbs, Brightness, Dimming and Colour

The chandelier light is more than a bulb: it is the base type, the number of lamps, the brightness, the colour and whether the bulbs can be dimmed. A beautiful chandelier with the wrong bulbs looks harsh or dim, and a poor dimmer causes flicker. This guide covers bulb bases and shapes, how much light you need, dimming, colour temperature and heat, with indicative bulb prices. For the fixtures, see chandeliers.

Bulb bases and shapes

Check the holder first. Common bases are the small E14 screw for candle bulbs, the E27 screw and the B22 bayonet pin. Shapes include candle, flame tip, globe and filament. Buy the right base and a shape that fits the shade or crystal.

How much light you need

Add up the lumens, not watts. Chandeliers give soft, decorative light, so combine them with ceiling lights. As a rough guide, a few small LED bulbs at about 5 to 7 W each give a pleasant glow, and a larger fixture with many arms gives more. Check the maximum wattage for the holder.

Dimming

A dimmer lets one chandelier serve dinner, conversation and cleaning. Use dimmable bulbs and a dimmer that matches LED, and check the minimum load. Mismatches cause flicker or buzzing, so test before fixing.

Colour and heat

Warm white, around 2700 K, suits chandeliers and shows crystal at its best. Avoid cool daylight bulbs, which look harsh. LEDs run cooler than old bulbs, which is gentler on shades and crystal.

How we quote

Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Check the holder base, commonly E14, E27 or B22, then choose warm white LED candle or filament bulbs of a size that fits the shades. Use dimmable bulbs with a compatible dimmer, and replace all the bulbs together so the colour stays even.

Chandeliers give soft, decorative light, so combine them with ceiling lights. A few small LED bulbs at about 5 to 7 W each give a pleasant glow, and larger fixtures use more. Check the holder's maximum wattage and use a dimmer for control.

Yes, as long as the base matches and the bulb fits the shade. LEDs run cooler and use less power, so they are gentler on old fittings. Choose warm white and dimmable bulbs, and check the wiring and holders for wear. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.

A mismatch between the LED bulbs and the dimmer is the usual cause, along with too low a total load. Use dimmable LED bulbs and a dimmer made for LED, and check the minimum load. Replacing the dimmer often fixes it. Prices and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Warm white, around 2700 K, flatters crystal and gives a relaxed glow. Avoid cool daylight bulbs, which look harsh and flat. Keep all the bulbs in one chandelier the same colour and brand. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

Send the room size, the ceiling height and a photo on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the fixture, the wattage and the bulbs or driver, so you can compare it with other quotes and with the indicative ranges on this page.
