Pendant lights hang from the ceiling on a cord, chain or rod, and they bring light down to where it is used: over a dining table, a kitchen island, a bedside or an entry. Size and hanging height
Over a table, hang the bottom of the pendant about 30 to 36 in above the surface, and over a kitchen island similar. In a hall, keep the bottom at least about 7 ft above the floor. Choose a size in proportion to the table, roughly half to two-thirds its width for a single large pendant. See chandelier size and height guide.
Shades and bulbs
Metal domes direct light down, glass and fabric shades diffuse it and open cages show the bulb. Choose bulbs to suit the shade, such as warm LED filament bulbs for glass and a diffused LED for fabric. Check the holder type and the maximum wattage.

Fitting and safety
Fix pendants to a solid point, not only to a false ceiling board, and check the weight. Use a canopy that hides the wiring, and keep bulbs within the holder's maximum wattage.
Where pendants work best
Pendants suit dining tables, islands, bedsides, entries and stairwells, and they add style in rooms with a plain ceiling. Combine them with ceiling lights so the room still has general light.

A pendant lights a table or island well, but a room still needs ambient light, so combine pendants with downlights or flush lights and put them on separate switches. Check the holder type and the maximum wattage, then choose a warm white LED, such as a filament-style bulb for glass shades. Make sure the bulb fits the shade so it does not overheat, and choose a dimmable bulb if you use a dimmer.
