Ceiling Lights: Types, Sizes, Brightness and Where Each One Works
Ceiling lights give the general light in a room, and the right choice depends on the ceiling height, the room size and whether you have a false ceiling. Recessed downlights and panels disappear into the ceiling, flush and surface fittings sit on it and fancy or pendant lights hang from it. This guide covers the types, sizes, brightness by room, colour temperature and placement. For LED types in detail, see our LED these lights page.
Types of ceiling light
Four families cover most homes.
| Type | Look | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recessed downlight or panel | Flush, discreet | False ceilings | Needs a ceiling void |
| Surface-mounted light | Sits on the ceiling | Bare slab ceilings | Adds a little depth |
| Flush or fancy light | Decorative disc or shape | Bedrooms, halls | Style on a budget |
| Pendant or hanging light | Hangs on a cord or rod | Dining, entry, kitchens | Needs height |

Sizes and spacing
For recessed lights, spacing of roughly 3 to 4 ft between lights and 2 to 3 ft from walls is a common starting point, with fewer, stronger lights in small rooms. For flush lights, choose a diameter that suits the room: a small bedroom may take one light of about 12 to 16 in. See ceiling light design for layouts.
Brightness by room
Commonly suggested light levels are about 100 to 200 lux in living rooms and bedrooms and 300 to 500 lux in kitchens and studies. Use lumens from the pack to compare bulbs, not watts. See the LED bulb watt guide.
Colour temperature and dimming
Warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms, neutral white suits kitchens and studies. Dimmable lights need compatible drivers and dimmers, so check before you buy. A mix of warm ambient light and a few brighter task lights works well.

Placement tips
- Plan wiring before the false ceiling closes.
- Avoid glare by not placing lights directly over seating.
- Use separate switches for different zones.
- Keep spare drivers accessible for LED panels.

Frequently Asked Questions
A flush or recessed warm white light with a dimmer, plus bedside lamps or wall lights for reading, works well. Avoid one harsh central light. Choose around 100 to 200 lux of general light, and keep the colour warm for relaxation. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
A common starting point is roughly 3 to 4 ft between lights and 2 to 3 ft from walls, adjusted for the ceiling height and the light output. Use fewer, stronger lights in small rooms. Test with a mock layout before cutting the ceiling.
Yes, use surface-mounted or flush LED lights that fix directly to the slab. Recessed lights need a ceiling void. Surface lights add a small depth and suit bare ceilings. Make sure the fixing and the wiring suit the ceiling type. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.
Warm white around 2700 to 3000 K suits living rooms and bedrooms, and neutral white around 4000 K suits kitchens and studies. Keep the colour consistent in each room, and avoid mixing very different colours on one ceiling. Prices and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.
Indicative ranges are PKR 240 to 400 for LED downlights, from about PKR 600 for round 12 W panels, PKR 990 to 1,000 for modern pendants and about PKR 1,600 for 20 W battens. Prices vary by brand, so confirm current rates. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
