LED Ceiling Lights: Panels, Downlights, COB Spots and Surface Types

LED ceiling lights dominate new homes because they are slim, efficient and last for years, but there are several types, and the driver and the heat management decide how long they last. This guide covers LED panels, downlights, COB spots and surface lights, how to read watts and lumens, dimming, heat and indicative price ranges. It sits within our ceiling lights guide.

Types of these lights

Choose by the ceiling.

Watts, lumens and drivers

Compare lumens, not watts. A 7 W downlight commonly gives roughly 500 to 600 lumens, and a 12 W panel about 1,000 or more. The driver converts mains power to LED power and is the part most likely to fail, so choose a brand with a warranty and keep spares accessible.

Dimming and heat

Dimmable lights need a compatible driver and dimmer. LEDs need heat to escape, so avoid covering recessed lights with insulation and give them air. Overheating shortens life.

Indicative price ranges

Prices vary with wattage and brand.

Where these lights fit

LED panels and downlights suit false ceilings in lounges, bedrooms, offices and kitchens. Surface-mounted LED lights suit bare slab ceilings in rented homes, corridors and shops. Use warmer colour for relaxing rooms and neutral colour for work areas, and put groups on separate switches so the room can change from bright to soft. For layouts, see ceiling light design.

How we quote

Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Panels and downlights suit false ceilings, COB spots give focused light and surface lights suit bare slabs. Choose a reputable brand with a warranted driver, check the lumens, not just the watts, and pick warm white for living rooms and bedrooms. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.

It depends on the lumens you need. A 7 W downlight commonly gives roughly 500 to 600 lumens and a 12 W panel about 1,000 or more. Plan the total lumens for the room, and use several lights instead of one very bright one.

The driver or poor heat control is the usual cause, along with cheap components and voltage spikes. Choose a warranted brand, give recessed lights airflow and avoid covering them. Keep drivers accessible so they can be replaced. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.

Only if they and their drivers are dimmable, and the dimmer must match the type. Check the specification before buying. Poor combinations cause flicker or buzzing, so test one fitting before you commit to a whole room. Prices and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Indicative prices are PKR 240 to 400 for 7 W downlights, about PKR 400 for COB spots, from PKR 600 for 12 W panels and about PKR 1,600 for 20 W battens, with a broad range up to PKR 8,000 for larger or branded panels.

Send the room size, the ceiling height and a photo on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the fixture, the wattage and the bulbs or driver, so you can compare it with other quotes and with the indicative ranges on this page.
