Room Chandeliers: Choosing the Right Size and Style for Each Room

Room chandeliers have to suit the room, and the same chandelier can look perfect in a hall and overwhelming in a bedroom. The right choice follows the room size, the ceiling height and what happens in the room. This guide sets out sizing rules, hanging heights and style choices for living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, entrances and halls, and shows how to avoid the common mistakes. For the types, see our chandeliers guide.

Sizing at a glance

These are common starting points, not fixed rules.

RoomChandelier guideHanging height
Living room, 12 x 14 ftAbout 26 in diameter (length plus width in ft, as in)Bottom at least about 7 ft from the floor
Dining roomAbout half to two-thirds of the table widthAbout 30 to 36 in above the table
BedroomA smaller, lighter fixture, about 18 to 24 inClear of heads; avoid low over the bed

Living rooms

A living room suits a crystal, modern or fancy chandelier, with the size from the length-plus-width rule. Keep general light from ceiling lights and use the chandelier as the feature, on its own dimmer. See crystal and modern chandeliers.

Dining rooms

Centre the chandelier over the table, not the room, and size it to the table. A linear fixture suits a long table and a round one suits a round or square table. Hang it low enough for intimacy but not so low that it blocks the view across the table.

Bedrooms

Choose a smaller, softer chandelier on a dimmer, and avoid hanging a heavy fixture directly over the bed. Add bedside lamps for reading. In a low-ceiling room, use a flush or semi-flush fixture instead.

Entrances and halls

Entrances and double-height spaces take the largest, most dramatic chandeliers. Keep the bottom well clear of heads, plan a strong fixing and a safe way to reach the fixture for cleaning and bulb changes.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Too big for the room, which crowds the ceiling.
  • Hung too low or too high, missing the table.
  • No dimmer, so the light is always one level.
  • No general light, leaving the room dependent on one fixture.

For exact sizes, see our chandelier size and height guide.

How we quote

Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions

A common rule is that the chandelier's diameter in inches is about the room's length plus width in feet, so a 12 x 14 ft room suits roughly 26 in. Keep the bottom at least about 7 ft above the floor and add a dimmer for control.

About half to two-thirds of the table's width is a good guide, centred over the table and hung roughly 30 to 36 in above the surface. A linear fixture suits a long table, and a round one suits a round or square table.

Yes, choose a smaller, softer fixture on a dimmer, with enough ceiling height, and avoid hanging a heavy one directly over the bed. Add bedside lamps for reading. In low-ceiling bedrooms, a flush or semi-flush light is a safer choice. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.

Keep the bottom at least about 7 ft above the floor where people walk, and more in a double-height space so it is seen from both levels. Plan a strong fixing and a safe way to clean it.

Usually yes. A chandelier is a feature, and it rarely gives enough even light on its own. Add ceiling lights, wall lights or lamps and put each on its own switch or dimmer so the room works for different uses. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

Send the room size, the ceiling height and a photo on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the fixture, the wattage and the bulbs or driver, so you can compare it with other quotes and with the indicative ranges on this page.
