PVC Board for Furniture: Where It Works Better Than MDF and Where It Does Not
PVC board for furniture is the waterproof alternative to wood-based boards. It does not swell, rot or feed termites, so it is a natural fit for bathrooms, kitchens and damp rooms where MDF fails. It is not a replacement for every board, though: it is softer, can bend under load and needs the right edge and fixing details. This guide shows where it fits. It is part of our MDF and HPL sheets range and connects to the PVC sheets section.
What PVC furniture board is
PVC furniture board is a sheet of expanded or foamed PVC, usually white or faced with a laminate or film. It is cut and screwed like timber but contains no wood fibre, so water cannot make it swell. The standard size is 8 x 4 ft, with thicknesses from thin panel board to about 18 mm for cabinet work.
It is lighter than MDF and cleaner to work in, with no dust from fibre. Our page on PVC foam board covers the material in more detail.

PVC Board for Furniture: Frequently Asked Questions
It is excellent for furniture exposed to water, such as bathroom vanities, sink units and laundry cabinets, because it does not swell or rot. It is softer than wood-based boards, so it needs supports for long shelves and heavy loads.
In wet rooms, yes, and it often performs better. In dry rooms, MDF is smoother for painting and shaping and holds screws and weight better. Many projects use PVC board for wet areas and wood-based board elsewhere in the same room.
The board itself does not absorb water or swell, which is why it suits bathrooms and kitchens. Joints and fixings still need sealing, and water should not be allowed to sit behind a unit where it could cause damp or mould on the wall.
Thin board is used for backs and drawer bottoms, around 12 mm for doors and light shelves, and about 18 mm for carcasses and vanity sides. Use a thicker board or extra supports for long spans, and confirm the real thickness in the quote.
Yes. It can be faced with HPL or film for a wood or colour finish, and with the right primer it can be painted. Use a suitable adhesive for laminate, and seal edges with PVC band so water cannot reach the joint.
