Melamine Sheets in Pakistan: What They Are and Where to Use Them

Melamine sheets are boards that arrive from the factory with a decorative melamine-resin surface already bonded to them, so a carpenter can cut and assemble without a separate laminating step. They are popular for wardrobes, shelving, kitchens and office furniture because they are quick to work with and economical. This guide explains how they are made, how they compare with HPL, and where they are the right choice. See the wider MDF and HPL sheets range for related boards.

What melamine sheets are

A melamine sheet has a decorative paper soaked in melamine resin and pressed onto a core board under heat and pressure, in one factory step. The core is usually particle board, MDF or HDHMR. The finished sheet is ready to cut, which is why it dominates mass-produced furniture.

The surface is smooth, stain-resistant and available in many colours and wood grains. It is thinner and less impact-resistant than HPL, but for the inside and sides of cabinets it is more than adequate.

These three surfaces are often confused. The table separates them.

Choosing the core under the melamine

The surface may look identical, but the core decides how the board behaves. Particle board is the cheapest and fine for dry shelves and office desks. MDF gives a smoother, denser base. A moisture-resistant core such as HDHMR is the right choice for kitchens and bathrooms.

Ask which core the sheet has, because a quote that names only the colour does not tell you what you are buying.

Thickness and size

The standard sheet is 8 x 4 ft (2440 x 1220 mm). Thickness runs from thin back panels to 18 mm for cabinet sides and doors and 25 mm for shelves and worktops. 18 mm is by far the most common. Match the thickness to the span: a long shelf in 18 mm may sag under books, so use thicker board or add a support.

Edge banding is part of the product

The cut edge of a melamine sheet shows the core, so every exposed edge needs a matching edge band. A PVC or ABS band fitted with hot-melt glue gives a clean finish and keeps moisture out. Poor banding is where melamine furniture fails first, so ask what band is used and how it is fitted.

Where melamine sheets work best

  • Wardrobe interiors and sides: economical and easy to wipe.
  • Office desks and storage: uniform look and quick assembly.
  • Shelving and display units: in dry rooms.
  • Kitchen carcasses: only with a moisture-resistant core and sealed edges.

For doors, worktops and surfaces that are touched and knocked all day, HPL or laminate on a good board lasts longer.

What affects the rate of melamine sheets

The rate depends on the core, thickness, brand and finish. Wood grains and special textures cost more than plain white. We quote each sheet in writing, since market rates change.

Melamine Sheets: Frequently Asked Questions

Melamine sheets are boards, usually particle board, MDF or HDHMR, with a melamine-resin decorative surface pressed on in the factory. They arrive ready to cut, in many colours and wood grains, and are widely used for wardrobes, shelves and office furniture.

Not exactly. Melamine is pressed onto the board at the factory, while HPL laminate is a separate thin sheet glued on by the workshop. HPL is harder and more impact-resistant. Melamine is cheaper and quicker to use, and fine for many indoor surfaces.

Yes, with a moisture-resistant core, fully sealed edges and no standing water. Ordinary particle board melamine can swell if water reaches the edge. For sink and hob areas, HDHMR or plywood with an HPL or melamine face is the safer build.

18 mm is the most common for cabinet sides, shelves and doors, with thinner board for back panels and thicker 25 mm board for long shelves and worktops. Ask for the exact thickness in the quote because actual thickness can vary between brands.

It resists everyday scratches but can chip at unprotected edges and under sharp impact. Good edge banding prevents most chipping, so ask how the edges are finished. For surfaces that take hard daily use, such as kitchen worktops, HPL is the stronger choice.

Send the colour or grain, thickness, core type and quantity on WhatsApp. We reply with a written rate per sheet that is current on that day, and we can include the matching edge band so that the whole job is quoted together in one message.
