Ceiling Fan Electricity Consumption in a Household: What Several Fans Add to Your Bill, Comparison With Other Appliances and Cutting the Cost

Ceiling fan electricity consumption looks small for one fan and large for a whole house, because a family often has five to ten fans running for ten hours a day in summer. This page looks at the household picture: what the fans add to a monthly bill, how that compares with a fridge, an air conditioner and lights, how tariff slabs change the cost and what you can do to cut it. For per-fan sums see ceiling fan power consumption and ceiling fan watts.

A household example

Suppose a house has six plain 75 watt fans, each running 10 hours a day for 30 days. Each fan uses 0.75 units a day, or 22.5 units a month. Six fans use 135 units. That is a large part of a summer bill, and at higher slabs each extra unit costs more.

Fans compared with other appliances

These typical monthly figures help you see where fans sit. Actual use varies.

ApplianceTypical monthly use
6 plain fans, 10 h a dayAbout 135 units
6 inverter fans, 10 h a dayAbout 54 units
Fridge, 24 h a dayAbout 60 - 100 units
1.5 ton inverter AC, 8 h a dayAbout 250 - 350 units
10 LED bulbs, 6 h a dayAbout 16 - 20 units

Prices move with brand, model, size and stock. Use these ranges to judge a quote, then compare the exact model and what is included.

Tariff slabs

Electricity in Pakistan is charged by slabs, and the rate per unit rises as your total units rise. Fans in summer can push a household into a higher slab. Saving 80 units from fans can lower the whole bill by more than 80 times the lowest rate, because it can drop you a slab. Check the tariff on your own bill.

What drives the cost

  • Watts per fan. Plain fans 70 to 90 W, inverter fans about 30 W.
  • Number of fans. A fan running in an empty room is wasted.
  • Hours. Summer nights run long.
  • Age and condition. Old fans draw more.

Cutting the cost

Switch off fans in empty rooms, clean the blades and oil or replace bearings. Replace the oldest and most used fans first. An inverter fan saves about 13 units a month for each fan running 10 hours a day. Use a timer switch to stop fans running all night if you do not need them.

Payback of replacing fans

An inverter fan costs PKR 3,000 to 8,000 more than a plain fan. If it saves 13 units a month at an average rate of PKR 40 a unit, that is PKR 520 a month, so the extra cost pays back in 6 to 15 months in a house where fans run all summer. In rarely used rooms the payback is longer.

Using fans with an air conditioner

A ceiling fan lets you set an AC a degree or two higher and still feel cool, which saves far more than the fan costs to run. Use fans to spread cool air, and keep them on low. See air cooler electricity consumption for another comparison.

Wiring and safety

A big house with many fans should have them on sensible circuits with an MCB each. Fixed wiring should be done by a licensed electrician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Six plain 75 watt fans running 10 hours a day use about 135 units a month. Six inverter fans use about 54 units. The figure depends on watts, hours and the number of fans running. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.

They can in summer, because slabs raise the cost per unit as total units rise. Saving a few dozen units can drop you a slab and lower the bill by more than the units alone suggest. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

Much cheaper. A plain fan uses about 75 watts and an inverter AC about 1,000 to 1,500, so one AC can use as much as 15 to 20 fans. A fan also lets you set the AC a little higher. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering.

Switch fans off in empty rooms, keep them clean and in good condition, replace the oldest fans with inverter models and use timers where you do not need them all night. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

In a house where fans run all summer, the extra cost of PKR 3,000 to 8,000 is often recovered in 6 to 15 months. In rarely used rooms it takes longer. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
