Air Cooler Electricity Consumption: Typical Watts, Units per Month, Running Cost and How to Cut the Bill

📖 5 min read

Air cooler electricity consumption is far lower than an air conditioner, which is the main reason many homes choose a cooler. A typical room air cooler uses about 100 to 250 watts, which means roughly one to two and a half units for ten hours of use. This guide explains how to read the watt label, how to work out monthly units and cost, how a cooler compares with an AC and a fan, and how to cut the bill. It is informational and the figures are typical ranges.

How much power a cooler uses

A room air cooler has a fan motor and a small water pump. Small units use about 80 to 120 watts, medium units about 150 to 200 watts and large units 250 watts or more. Because the pump and fan are the only loads, consumption is much lower than a compressor-based air conditioner, which can draw 1,000 to 1,800 watts.

Typical wattage by size

These typical ranges help you estimate. Always read the label on your own unit.

TypeTypical power
Small personal cooler, 12 watt classAbout 12 - 60 W
Small room cooler80 - 120 W
Medium room cooler150 - 200 W
Large room cooler250 - 350 W
Tower air cooler100 - 200 W

Prices move with brand, model, size and stock. Use these ranges to judge a quote, then compare the exact model and what is included.

How to work out units and cost

Multiply watts by hours and divide by 1,000 to get units. A 180 watt cooler running ten hours uses 1.8 units. Over 30 days that is 54 units. Multiply by your tariff per unit, which changes with your slab, to estimate the monthly cost. Heavy use can push your bill into a higher slab, so check your own tariff.

Air cooler versus AC

A 1.5 ton inverter AC may use about 1,000 to 1,500 watts, which is five to eight times a cooler. A cooler also adds humidity, works best in dry heat and needs ventilation, while an AC cools and dries the air. See our guides on air cooler versus AC and the best air cooler.

Air cooler versus fan

A ceiling fan uses 30 to 80 watts and does not cool the air, only the person. A cooler uses more power but lowers the air temperature in dry weather. Used together with an open window for ventilation, a cooler and a fan give good comfort at low cost. See pedestal fans for fan options.

How to cut the running cost

  • Use the pump only as needed. Run fan-only mode when the pads are damp.
  • Keep a window open. Fresh air lets the cooler work.
  • Clean the pads and tank. Dirty pads cut cooling and raise run time.
  • Right size. A too-small cooler runs flat out.
  • Use a timer. A timer switch stops it overnight.

Running a cooler on solar or inverter

Because it draws so little, a cooler suits solar and battery systems better than an AC. A 180 watt cooler on a 1 kilowatt inverter leaves room for lights and fans. Check the starting current of the pump and fan, and keep the wiring and breaker sized properly, as in our MCB guide.

Maintenance that keeps consumption low

Clean the water tank every few weeks, change the pads each season and wipe the fan blades. A weak pump, a dry pad or a dusty fan makes the cooler work harder for less cooling. Switch off the pump a few minutes before turning the cooler off so the pads dry and stay fresh.

Choosing a cooler that suits your room

Pick the size by room area, not by price. A cooler that is too small runs at full speed and still feels warm, while one that is too big wastes power. Check the tank size, the pad material and the airflow rating, and compare watts between models of the same size before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A small room cooler uses about 80 to 120 watts, a medium one about 150 to 200 watts and a large one 250 watts or more. Always read the label on the unit, because the figure varies by size and by model.

A 180 watt cooler used for ten hours a day consumes about 1.8 units a day, or roughly 54 units in 30 days. Multiply by your tariff to estimate the cost. Heavy use can push your bill into a higher slab. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

Yes. A cooler draws about 100 to 250 watts, while a 1.5 ton AC can draw 1,000 to 1,500 watts. A cooler works best in dry heat and needs ventilation, while an AC cools and dries the air in a closed room.

Yes, because it draws little power. A 180 watt cooler fits easily on a small inverter alongside lights and fans. Check the starting current of the pump and fan and size the wiring and breaker properly. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Keep a window open, clean the pads and tank, choose the right size and use fan-only mode when the pads are damp. A timer switch can stop it overnight. A dusty or dry cooler works harder for less cooling. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

Usually the same working day once you send the quantity, the size or rating and a photo. The reply is a written rate with the model, warranty and delivery listed, so you can compare it against other quotes line by line. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.
