Ceiling Fan Installation: Tools, Hook and Rod, Wiring, Blades, Balance Check, Fitting Charges and Safety Rules

📖 5 min read

Ceiling fan installation is a job that looks simple and goes wrong in predictable ways: a weak hook, a loose canopy or a bad connection. This guide takes you through the steps an electrician follows: the tools, the hook and rod, the wiring, fitting the blades and the balance check, with indicative fitting charges and the safety rules. It is informational, and wiring should be done by a licensed electrician. For hooks see ceiling fan brackets and for false ceilings see false ceiling fans.

Tools and materials

  • Stable ladder. Tall enough to work comfortably.
  • Screwdrivers and pliers. Insulated types.
  • Tester screwdriver or meter. To check the wires are dead.
  • Wire connectors and tape. Good quality.
  • Hook and rod set. Rated for the fan.

Step 1: switch off and plan

Switch off the breaker and check the wires with a tester. Decide the position of the fan, and mark the hook point. Read the fan manual, because rod lengths and wire colours vary. Keep the area under the ladder clear.

Step 2: fix the hook

The hook must be in the concrete slab, not in plaster or a false ceiling. Use a cast-in hook or a drilled anchor and test it by pulling hard. A weak hook is the main reason fans wobble or fall. See ceiling fan brackets.

Step 3: assemble the fan

Fix the blades to the arms on the floor, with all screws tight and washers in place. Thread the wires through the rod, fit the rod to the motor and fit the canopy. Hang the assembled motor from the hook with the safety cable if supplied.

Step 4: wire it

Connect the fan wires to the ceiling wires, live to live and neutral to neutral, and the earth to the earth. Use proper connectors and cover them with tape. The regulator or remote receiver goes in the canopy or the wall box. Fixed wiring should be done by a licensed electrician.

Step 5: test and balance

Switch on at low speed and watch for wobble. Tighten all screws, check blade alignment and use balancing weights if needed. Run on all speeds and listen for noise. A fan that wobbles after fitting usually has a loose hook, a bent blade or an unbalanced set.

Fitting charges

Charges vary by city and by job. These indicative ranges help you judge a quote.

ItemIndicative range
Fit a new fan on an existing hookPKR 500 - 1,200
Fix a hook in a slab, per fanPKR 300 - 1,000
Run a new wiring pointPKR 800 - 2,000
Fit a fan with light and remotePKR 800 - 2,000
Remove an old fanPKR 200 - 600

Prices move with brand, model, size and stock. Use these ranges to judge a quote, then compare the exact model and what is included.

Safety rules

  • Power off at the breaker. Not only at the switch.
  • Stable ladder. Never lean out.
  • Hook in the slab. Never plaster or a false ceiling.
  • Earth connected. A metal fan must be earthed.
  • Licensed electrician. For all wiring.

After fitting

Re-check the screws after a week, because vibration loosens them, and wipe the blades with a dry cloth once the fan has run for a day so any fitting dust does not settle. Protect the circuit with an MCB and use a regulator only on AC fans. See how to fix a ceiling fan for simple faults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Switch off at the breaker, fix a hook in the slab, assemble the blades and rod, hang the motor, connect the wires, then test and balance on all speeds. A licensed electrician should do the wiring. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.

Fitting a fan on an existing hook is about PKR 500 to 1,200, fixing a hook about PKR 300 to 1,000 per fan and running a new wiring point about PKR 800 to 2,000. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

In the concrete slab, not in plaster, a false ceiling or a light frame. Test it by pulling hard before hanging the fan. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Usually a loose hook, a bent blade or unbalanced blades. Tighten all screws, check blade alignment and use the balancing weights if supplied. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

You can assemble it, but wiring should be done by a licensed electrician, and the hook must be in the slab. Always switch off at the breaker and use a stable ladder. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

Send the quantity, the size or rating and a photo of the space. We reply with a written rate that names the model and the warranty, and lists what is and is not included, so the comparison with other sellers is fair.
