Kitchen Faucets Explained: How to Judge Quality by Body Metal, Cartridge, Aerator and Finish, Water-Saving Features and Pull-Out Sprays
Kitchen faucets look alike on a shelf, but the difference between a faucet that lasts ten years and one that drips in six months is inside: the body metal, the cartridge and the finish. This guide teaches you how to judge faucet quality before you buy, with tips on cartridges, aerators, finishes, water saving and pull-out sprays. It focuses on quality rather than price, which is covered at kitchen tap price. For types see kitchen sink taps and for sinks see SS kitchen sinks.
Body metal
Solid brass bodies resist corrosion and last longest. Zinc alloy is cheaper and can pit or crack, and plastic bodies suit only light use. Lift the faucet: a heavy one usually has more brass. A thin spout that rings when tapped is a sign of thin material.

Cartridge quality
The cartridge controls flow and temperature, and a cheap one causes most drips. Ceramic disc cartridges are smooth and last years. Ask the shop for the cartridge size, so you can find a spare. Ball and compression types wear sooner.
Aerators
An aerator mixes air with water for a soft stream and saves water, and a good one is easy to unscrew and clean. In hard water areas, scale clogs aerators quickly, so check that spares are cheap and available. A flow limiter of 6 to 8 litres per minute saves water without hurting rinsing.

Finishes
- Chrome. Bright, cheap and easy to clean.
- Brushed nickel or steel. Hides water marks.
- Matte black. Modern but shows scale and can scratch.
- PVD gold. Hard-wearing and costly.
Pull-out sprays
Pull-out and pull-down faucets make rinsing pots and cleaning the sink easier. Check the hose quality, the weight that retracts the spray head and the switch between stream and spray. Weak retraction causes the head to droop. See sink tap for hose and valve fitting.
Matching faucet to sink
The faucet must reach the middle of the bowl and clear the sink rim. A deep sink needs a high arc, a double bowl needs a swivel spout and a single-hole sink needs a single-hole faucet. See kitchen sink faucets for matching.
Warranty and service
Ask for a written warranty of at least a year on the cartridge and finish, and check that the seller or maker has a service point. Keep the invoice and box. Check that cartridges and aerators can be bought separately.
Test before you buy
In the shop, move the handle through its full range. It should be smooth, with no grinding. Check the finish for pits and the joints for gaps. Fixed plumbing and gas work should be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
Before you decide
Compare two or three faucets of the same style, holding each to feel the weight. Ask about the cartridge size, spare parts and warranty, and check the finish for flaws. Choose a faucet that suits your sink and water pressure, not just the look. A good faucet quietly serves you for years, while a poor one irritates you every day.
