Sink Tap Fitting Guide: Removing and Fitting a Sink Tap, Flexible Hoses, Isolation Valves, Washers and Cartridges, Common Leaks and Fixes
A sink tap is a small part that causes big irritation when it drips, and most problems come from the fitting rather than the tap itself. This page is a practical guide to fitting and fixing a sink tap: removing the old one, choosing flexible hoses and isolation valves, fitting the new tap, replacing washers and cartridges and curing common leaks. It lists typical plumber charges and the parts you need. For choosing a tap see kitchen sink taps and for prices see kitchen tap price.
Tools and parts
- Basin wrench or adjustable spanner. For the tight nuts under the sink.
- Flexible hoses. Braided stainless hoses of the right length.
- PTFE tape. For threaded joints.
- Isolation valves. To shut off each supply.
- Bucket and cloths. For spills.

Removing the old tap
Turn off the supply valves or the main, open the tap to release pressure, place a bucket, disconnect the hoses and unscrew the nut that holds the tap to the sink. Lift the tap out and clean the sink surface. If the nut is corroded, soak it and use a basin wrench.
Fitting the new tap
Fit the rubber seal, insert the tap, tighten the fixing nut from below and connect the flexible hoses, hot on the left and cold on the right. Use PTFE tape on threaded joints that are not rubber-sealed. Turn on slowly and check for drips. Run the tap for a minute to clear air and debris.

Washers and cartridges
A dripping pillar tap usually needs a new rubber washer or seat. A single lever tap drips when the cartridge wears, and a ceramic disc cartridge is a cheap, quick replacement. Buy the cartridge that matches the make and size, and bring the old one to the shop.
Common leaks and fixes
- Drip from the spout. Worn washer or cartridge.
- Leak at the base. Worn O-ring or loose nut.
- Leak at the hose. Loose connection or a worn hose.
- Weak flow. Clogged aerator or a partly closed valve.
Water pressure and valves
An isolation valve under the sink lets you stop the water to one tap without cutting the house supply. Fit them if you do not have them. In low-pressure homes check the valves are fully open and the aerator is clean. See water tanks and pumps for pressure.
When to call a plumber
Call one if pipes are corroded, the nut will not move, there is a leak inside the wall or the pipes are not standard. Fixed plumbing and gas work should be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter. See our kitchen faucets page for quality checks when choosing a tap.
