Ceiling Fan Voltage in Pakistan: The 220 V Supply, What Low Voltage Does to a Fan, Stabilisers, Why Fans Slow Down and DC Fan Voltages

Ceiling fan voltage in Pakistan is nominally 220 to 240 volts AC, but the voltage at your wall can be much lower in a heavy summer evening, and that is the main reason fans slow down and run hot. This page explains the standard voltage, what low voltage does to an induction fan and a brushless fan, how stabilisers help, how to measure your supply and which DC voltages battery fans use. For watts see ceiling fan watts and for current see ceiling fan amperage.

Standard voltage

Home supply in Pakistan is single-phase 220 to 240 volts at 50 hertz. Fans are rated for that range, usually printed on the label as 220-240 V. The rating tells you the voltage for which the maker designed the winding, and the fan performs best near that range.

What low voltage does

When the voltage falls to 160 or 180 volts, an induction fan turns slower and moves less air. The motor current rises, and the winding runs hotter, which shortens its life. A fan that struggles at low voltage may overheat and its capacitor fails earlier. Low voltage is common in summer evenings in some areas.

SupplyEffect on a plain fan
220 - 240 VNormal, rated performance
190 - 210 VSlightly slow, still safe
160 - 190 VSlow, hot motor, shorter life
Below 160 VMay stall, risk of damage
Above 250 VFast, risk to capacitor and electronics

Prices move with brand, model, size and stock. Use these ranges to judge a quote, then compare the exact model and what is included.

Brushless fans and voltage

A brushless fan with an electronic controller often works over a wide range, such as 120 to 260 volts, and keeps its speed better when the supply sags. Check the voltage range on the label. This is a practical reason to prefer a brushless fan in an area with weak supply. See brushless ceiling fans.

Stabilisers

A stabiliser holds the output near 220 volts. A small unit of 500 to 2,000 VA can serve fans and lights. Choose one with a wide input range, and rated above the load. Many people use one stabiliser for the whole fan circuit, but it adds a cost and loses a little power.

Measuring your supply

A plug-in voltmeter or a digital panel voltmeter shows the actual voltage. Check at the time of day the fan struggles. If the voltage is persistently low, tell your electrician about the wiring and the connection, because a loose or thin supply line can add to the drop.

Why fans slow down

  • Low supply voltage. The most common cause.
  • Weak capacitor. Slow start and low speed.
  • Worn bearings. Friction.
  • Thin or long wiring. Voltage drop.
  • Dirty blades. Extra load.

DC fan voltages

Battery and solar fans use 12, 24 or 48 volt DC. A 12 volt fan on a 24 volt supply is damaged, so match the voltage. See 12 volt ceiling fans and DC ceiling fans. Fixed wiring should be done by a licensed electrician.

What to do about low voltage

Use brushless fans where the supply is weak, add a stabiliser for important circuits, check the wiring for loose joints and clean fans so they run easily. If the problem is persistent, report it to the utility with a recorded reading.

Indicative ceiling fan rates

These are indicative market ranges in Pakistani rupees, not a fixed quote. Exact rates depend on brand, size, quality and quantity, so compare at least two quotations on the same specification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Home supply is 220 to 240 volts AC at 50 hertz, and ceiling fans are rated for that range. The label shows the rated voltage. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

Most often low supply voltage at peak load. A weak capacitor, worn bearings or thin wiring can also cause it. A voltmeter at the wall shows the actual voltage. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering.

Yes. At 160 to 190 volts an induction fan runs slow and hot, which shortens its life, and below 160 volts it may stall. Brushless fans cope better with a wide range. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering.

Not always. In areas with persistently low voltage, a stabiliser or brushless fans help. Choose a stabiliser with a wide input range and a rating above the load. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

Commonly 12, 24 or 48 volts DC. The fan must match the battery voltage, and a wrong voltage damages it. Check the label and the manual. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.

Usually the same working day once you send the quantity, the size or rating and a photo. The reply is a written rate with the model, warranty and delivery listed, so you can compare it against other quotes line by line. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.
