Jali Door Design: Lattice Patterns, Privacy, Light and Where to Use Them

Jali door design borrows the traditional lattice screen: a pattern cut right through the leaf or a panel, so air and light pass while the view stays broken up. It suits entrances, gates, cupboards and partitions where you want ventilation and character at the same time. This guide covers patterns, privacy and light, materials, backing options and care. For the wider technique, see our CNC patterns guide.

What a jali pattern is

A jali is an ornamental lattice with a repeated geometric or floral pattern cut through the material. In a door, it may fill a panel above or beside a solid area, or form the whole leaf. Light and air pass through the cut-outs, and the pattern casts shadow on the floor.

Popular jali patterns

Geometric stars, hexagons and diamonds are the most common, with arch and floral lattices for traditional homes. Choose the cut-out size by use: smaller holes give more privacy and larger ones give more light and air.

Jali Doors: Frequently Asked Questions

A jali door has a lattice pattern cut through the leaf or a panel in it, so light and air pass through while the pattern breaks up the view. It is made by CNC routing MDF or wood, or from metal, and suits entrances, gates, cupboards and partitions.

It depends on the pattern size. Fine patterns give good privacy and open patterns give more light and air. Backing the jali with frosted glass or a sheet adds privacy without losing the pattern, and a solid lower leaf with a jali upper panel is a common compromise.

Yes, usually as a panel or a sidelight in a solid door, or as an outer screen door. An open jali gives less security and lets in dust and rain, so back it with glass or place it under a porch. Keep the main lock on a solid part.

MDF takes fine detail and is popular, solid wood suits bolder patterns and natural finishes, and metal suits gates. Check that the strips between cut-outs are thick enough not to break, and seal every cut edge, since raw MDF absorbs moisture.

Use a soft brush or a vacuum to lift dust from the lattice, and a lightly damp cloth on the faces. Avoid soaking the leaf. Fine patterns collect more dust, so a medium or open pattern is easier to keep clean in dusty areas.

Send the opening size, a photo of the pattern you like and where the door will be used on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the material, pattern, backing, frame and hardware for your door.
