Main Door Design: Entrance Styles, Materials and Security Choices
Your main door sets the first impression of the house and does the hardest job in it: it faces sun, rain, dust and security risks every day. A good main door design balances style with structure, so this guide covers entrance styles, the materials that cope with Pakistani weather, size and proportion, locks and security, and the finish that lasts. For trend ideas, read our main door design ideas article, and for lounge-facing entries see hall entrances.
Main door styles that work
Four looks cover most entrances.
| Style | Look | Best for | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern flush | Smooth or lightly grooved | Contemporary facades | Hardware becomes the feature |
| Classic panelled | Raised panels, moulded edges | Traditional homes | Adds depth and character |
| Carved or CNC | Routed or carved patterns | Statement entrances | See the CNC guide |
| Double leaf | Two wide leaves | Large entrances | Needs a strong frame |
Carved patterns are in our CNC patterns guide.

Materials for an entrance
Under a deep porch, solid wood looks and ages well. In direct sun, an engineered leaf with an HPL or laminate face resists fading and warping better. For maximum security, steel doors are the strongest, often with a wood-look finish for the inside.
Size and proportion
An entrance is usually wider and thicker than a room door, with a double leaf for large openings. Keep the proportion tall and the handle at a comfortable height, and align the door with the facade lines so the entrance reads as one composition with the porch, the wall cladding and the lighting around it. Our standard door sizes guide lists usual dimensions.
Locks and security
A strong door needs a strong frame, three sturdy hinges and a quality multi-point or mortise lock. Fit a door viewer or a smart lock for convenience. Compare options in our door lock price guide, and make sure the frame is anchored well into the wall.

Weather and finish
Sun, rain and dust shorten the life of an unprotected finish. Choose a finish rated for outdoor use, seal every edge and add a drip edge and a porch roof where you can. Dark colours absorb more heat, so plan for expansion and use quality hardware.
Colour and the facade
Match the door to the facade: warm wood against stone, black against white, or a deep green against light plaster. See door colour ideas for palettes, door colors for individual shades, and keep the interior face compatible with the hallway.

Main Door Design: Frequently Asked Questions
Solid wood suits covered entrances, an engineered leaf with an HPL or laminate face suits entrances that take direct sun, and steel suits maximum security. Choose by exposure and security needs, and make sure the frame, hinges and lock are as strong as the leaf itself.
Main doors are usually wider and thicker than room doors, often with a double leaf for large entrances. Measure the finished opening and plan the proportion with the facade. Confirm the leaf, frame and hinge sizes in writing, because heavy leaves need strong frames and three hinges.
A flush or lightly grooved leaf in walnut, oak or a dark finish, with a long vertical handle, is the dominant modern look. Clean lines, minimal ornament and hidden or slim hardware suit contemporary facades. Add a CNC pattern only if you want a statement feature.
Use a strong frame anchored into the wall, three sturdy hinges and a quality multi-point or mortise lock. Add a door viewer or smart lock, and consider a steel door or a steel-reinforced leaf. A strong door in a weak frame is still weak, so check both.
Natural finishes fade and crack in direct sun, so use a weather-rated finish, seal every edge and add shade if possible. An engineered leaf with an HPL or laminate face resists sun and moisture better and needs less upkeep than a bare natural finish.
