Fan Repair in Pakistan: Common Faults, Indicative Charges, What You Can Fix Yourself and When to Replace

📖 5 min read

Fan repair is one of the most common household electrical jobs, and most faults are cheap to fix if you know what you are hearing. This guide explains the common faults in ceiling, pedestal and table fans, indicative repair charges, what you can safely check yourself, when it is cheaper to replace the fan and how to choose a repair shop. It is informational only, and Finishes.pk does not offer a repair service.

Common fan faults

Fans fail in predictable ways. The fan runs slowly or will not start, hums, wobbles, rattles, gives a shock or smells of burning. Most of these come from a weak capacitor, dry bearings, a loose blade or a failing regulator. The sound and the speed often tell an experienced technician where to look.

Indicative repair charges

Charges vary by city and by fan. These ranges help you judge a quote, and parts are usually extra.

Fan runs slow or will not start

A slow fan that starts only if you push the blades usually has a weak capacitor. It is a small, cheap part, and a technician can swap it in minutes. A fan that is silent and hot may have a burnt winding. A fan that runs only on one speed may have a faulty regulator.

Noise, wobble and rattle

A hum can come from a weak capacitor or a mismatched regulator. A rattle often points to a loose blade screw or a loose canopy. A wobble usually means a bent blade or an unbalanced set. Tighten the screws with the fan off, and use the balancing weights if the maker supplied them.

What you can check yourself

  • Switch off at the breaker before you touch anything.
  • Tighten blade and canopy screws.
  • Wipe the blades. Dust adds load and wobble.
  • Check the regulator. Try another speed or plate.
  • Look at the plug and socket for burn marks.

When to replace instead of repair

If the repair costs more than half the price of a new fan, or the motor is burnt, replace it. An old, noisy fan that uses 80 watts can also be replaced with a 30 watt inverter fan that saves power. See ceiling fans for options.

Choosing a repair shop

Ask what the repair includes and how long it takes. A good technician tells you the fault, shows the old part and gives a short warranty on the repair. Avoid anyone who suggests rewinding without checking the capacitor first. Keep the receipt.

Safety

Fans carry mains voltage, and a ceiling fan is heavy. Switch off at the breaker, use a stable ladder and never work on a live fan. If a fan gives a shock or smells of burning, stop using it and have it checked. Fixed wiring should be done by a licensed electrician.

Spare parts and brands

Capacitors, blades, regulators and remotes are widely available for common brands. For less known brands, ask the seller before buying whether parts are available. Our guides on small fan brands and Khurshid fans list what to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

A visit is about PKR 300 to 800, a capacitor swap about PKR 300 to 900, new bearings about PKR 600 to 1,500 and a motor rewind about PKR 1,500 to 4,000. Parts are usually extra, so ask for a written quote.

A slow fan that starts only when you push the blades usually has a weak capacitor, which is a cheap part. A hot, silent fan may have a burnt winding. A faulty regulator can also cause low speed. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

Often yes. Switch off at the breaker, tighten the blade and canopy screws, and use the balancing weights if supplied. A bent blade or a loose hook needs a proper fix, and the hook must be in the slab. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering.

Replace it if the repair costs more than half the price of a new fan or the motor is burnt. An old 80 watt fan can be swapped for a 30 watt inverter fan that saves power every month. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Only simple checks, with the power off at the breaker. Do not open a live fan. If the fan shocks you, smells of burning or sparks, stop using it and call a technician. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
