How CNC cutting works
A design is drawn on a computer, converted to cutting paths and fed to a router that moves along three axes cutting grooves and reliefs. It is fast, repeatable and accurate. Different bits give V-grooves, flat pockets and rounded carvings.
Materials
- MDF. Smooth and cheap, takes paint, not for wet areas.

- Solid wood. Rich grain, costly, can warp.

Depth and detail
Typical cuts are 3 to 10 millimetres deep, and fine detail needs smaller bits and slower cutting. Very deep cuts weaken thin panels. Check minimum line width and corner radius with the workshop before approving a design.
Painting and polish
