Door Paint Guide: Enamel, PU and Water-Based Paints for Wooden, Steel and Plastic Doors, Primer, Undercoat, Brush and Roller Finish, Drying, Indicative Rates Per Door and Care in Pakistan
Door paint gives doors a solid colour and protects them, and the right paint, primer and technique decide whether the finish stays smooth or chips and peels. Painting a door costs about PKR 1,200 to PKR 6,000. This page covers enamel, PU and water-based paints for wooden, steel and plastic doors, primer, undercoat, brush and roller finish, drying, indicative rates and care. The same notes apply to wood door paint searches. For related pages see door polish, wooden door paint colours and room door colour.
Types of door paint
- Enamel paint. Hard, glossy, oil or synthetic based, the traditional choice.
- PU paint. Very durable and scratch resistant, good for high-use doors.
- Water-based paint. Low odour, quick drying, easy clean-up.

Primer and undercoat
Prime bare wood and steel with a suitable primer, such as wood primer or anti-rust primer, then add an undercoat. Skipping primer causes peeling and tannin or rust stains. Plastic doors need a special primer or sanding.

Preparation
Clean grease, sand the surface smooth, remove loose paint, fill dents and wipe dust. Take off handles, or mask them. Paint in dry, dust-free weather and lay the door flat if possible to avoid drips.
Application
Use a good brush for edges and panels and a fine foam roller for flat surfaces, working in thin coats and following the grain. Two finish coats give depth. Let each coat dry fully, and sand lightly between coats.
Colour choice
Light colours make rooms bright, dark colours hide marks and white shows dirt. Choose a colour that suits walls and floor, see room door colour and wooden door paint colours.
Care
Wipe with a soft damp cloth and avoid abrasive cleaners. Touch up chips early to prevent moisture entering the wood. Repaint every 3 to 5 years, or sooner on sunny main doors. Fitting should be done by a trained carpenter or fixer, and the frame and wall checked for level before the door is hung.
What to check before buying
- Paint type. Matches the door and use
- Primer. Right for the surface
- Coats. Two finish coats
- Preparation. Sanded and clean
Before you decide
Choose paint to suit the door, prime properly and apply thin coats. A well painted door looks fresh for years and protects the wood or metal beneath. Ask the painter for the product names and keep a small tin of the colour for touch-ups.
