Choosing the timber

A standard main door is 2.1 metres high and 0.9 to 1.2 metres wide, with a thickness of 45 to 50 millimetres. Double doors span 1.5 to 2.0 metres. Choose a thickness that suits weight and security, and plan the frame to match the wall.
Weather protection
Seal every face including the top and bottom edges, use PU polish, add a drip edge and a raised threshold, and protect the door with a porch or canopy. Direct sun and rain are the biggest enemies. Re-polish every 3 to 5 years.
