Wallpaper for Wall: Which Walls Suit It, Preparation, Adhesive and Hanging Steps
Wallpaper for wall surfaces only works when the wall is dry, smooth and sound, so preparation decides more than the design. Damp, flaking paint, cracks and bumps show through the paper and cause bubbles and peeling. This guide explains which walls suit wallpaper, how to prepare them, which adhesive to use, how to hang and match rolls and what mistakes to avoid. For types and rates, see our wallpaper in Pakistan guide.
Which walls suit wallpaper
Dry, flat, sound plaster or well-painted walls suit it. Fresh plaster must cure first, and damp walls need the cause fixed. Textured walls need smoothing.
| Wall | Suitable? | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth, painted, dry | Yes | Clean and dust-free |
| New plaster | After curing | Seal and prime |
| Flaking paint or cracks | Not yet | Scrape, fill and sand |
| Damp or salt-stained | No | Fix the cause first |
| Textured wall | With smoothing | Skim or use lining paper |

Preparing the wall
Scrape loose paint, fill cracks and holes, sand smooth, remove dust and apply a primer or sealer. A smooth, even wall is the single biggest factor in a flat result.
Adhesive and tools
Use the adhesive the wallpaper maker recommends, a smoothing brush, a sharp knife, a straight edge and a plumb line. Self-adhesive types need a very smooth wall and no adhesive.
Hanging steps
- Mark a vertical line with a plumb line.
- Cut strips with extra length for trimming and pattern match.
- Apply paste to the paper or wall as directed.
- Hang and smooth from the centre outwards.
- Trim edges and wipe off excess paste.
Matching patterns
Check the pattern repeat and the match type, such as straight or drop match, before cutting. Buy enough rolls from the same batch, since colours differ between batches.
Damp and humidity
Do not wallpaper over damp. Ventilate, fix leaks and let the wall dry before starting. In humid areas, choose vinyl and keep rooms ventilated to prevent mould and peeling.
Common mistakes
- Skipping wall preparation.
- Not priming new plaster.
- Hanging on damp walls.
- Ordering too few rolls.
How we quote
Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, if the paint is sound, smooth and clean, with no flaking. Remove loose paint, fill cracks, sand smooth and dust off. Glossy paint should be lightly sanded or primed. A poor surface shows through the paper. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
Only after the plaster has fully cured and dried, and then sealed or primed. Fresh plaster is alkaline and damp and can cause peeling and stains. Wait the time the plaster maker advises before wallpapering. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.
Prepare the wall well, use the right adhesive, smooth out air bubbles and avoid damp. Press edges firmly and keep rooms ventilated. Peeling at seams usually means weak adhesive, a dusty wall or damp. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the supplier before ordering.
Measure the wall width and height, divide by the roll coverage and add allowance for pattern repeat and trimming, often 10 to 15 per cent. Buy all rolls from the same batch to avoid colour differences.
A careful person can hang wallpaper on a small, well-prepared wall, especially self-adhesive types. Large walls, patterned rolls and tall ceilings are easier with an experienced fitter. Do a test strip first. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
