How the wallpaper roll calculator works

The calculator works in strips, the way wallpaper is hung. It divides the wall width by the roll width to find how many strips you need, then works out the length of each strip from the wall height plus a trim allowance and, for patterned paper, the pattern repeat. It then divides the roll length by the strip length to find how many strips one roll gives, and divides the strips needed by that number to give the rolls to buy.

This is more accurate than dividing the wall area by the roll area, because each strip is cut from a whole roll and offcuts rarely fit the next strip. A taller wall or a larger pattern repeat wastes more paper.

Pattern repeat and waste

A plain or random-texture paper wastes little, so leave the repeat at zero. A patterned paper must match across seams, so each strip starts at a point in the repeat, and the calculator rounds the strip length up to a whole number of repeats. A large repeat on a tall wall can mean fewer strips per roll and more rolls than you expect. Check the repeat and the match type, straight or drop, on the label before you buy.

Always buy all rolls from the same batch, because colours differ between batches, and add one spare roll for repairs when the pattern is expensive or discontinued.

Measuring the wall

Add up the width of every wall you will cover, and measure the height from the skirting to the ceiling or the cornice. If a door or window runs full height, enter its width to skip it. Smaller openings are not deducted, which gives a safe margin. Measure walls at more than one height, because they are rarely perfectly straight.
