False Ceiling Lights Guide: Recessed Downlights, Cove Strips, Panel Lights and Profile Lights, Cut-Out Sizes and Depth, Heat and Drivers, Spacing and Layout, Dimming, Indicative Rates and Installation Tips in Pakistan

False ceiling lights sit inside or behind a gypsum, POP or PVC ceiling, and the right type depends on ceiling depth, heat and the look you want. Downlights give direct light, cove strips give glow and panels give even coverage. Prices run from about PKR 250 per light to PKR 5,000 for a panel. This page covers recessed downlights, cove strips, panel lights and profile lights, cut-out sizes and depth, heat and drivers, spacing and layout, dimming, rates and installation. For related pages see down lights, linear light and false ceiling designs.

Types of false ceiling lights

  • Recessed downlights. Round or square lights in cut-outs.
  • Cove strips. Hidden LEDs that glow along edges.
  • Panel lights. Flat square panels, even and shadow-free.
  • Profile and linear lights. Slim lines for modern ceilings.

Cut-out sizes and depth

Downlights need a specific hole diameter, commonly 70 to 100 mm for 7 to 12 W lights, and about 5 to 10 cm of depth above the board for the body and driver. Check the maker's cut-out size before cutting.

Heat and drivers

Quality LEDs run cool but their drivers produce heat, so leave ventilation and do not bury drivers in insulation. Place drivers where they can be reached through an access hatch.

Spacing and layout

Space downlights about 1 to 1.5 metres apart, away from walls by 50 to 60 cm, and avoid placing a grid of identical lights over a bed or seating. Use cove strips for ambient glow.

Dimming

Choose dimmable lights with compatible dimmers or drivers to avoid flicker, and group lights into circuits for control.

Installation tips

Plan wiring before boarding, test lights before closing the ceiling and leave an access panel. Wiring and installation should be done by a qualified electrician, with power switched off at the breaker and the circuit rating checked first.

Before you decide

Plan cut-outs, drivers and circuits before the ceiling is closed. Compare at least two quotes on the same model and specification, check the wattage, lumens, colour temperature and warranty on the box, keep the invoice and test the product before paying in full. Ask the seller about the return policy for faulty items and whether spare parts or replacement bulbs are available, and photograph the packaging on delivery. Prices change with exchange rates and stock, so confirm the current figure before you decide, and be careful with very low prices on unbranded products with exaggerated wattage claims.
