Kitchen Mixer Taps Explained: Monobloc, Dual-Lever, Pull-Out and Wall Mixers, Ceramic Cartridges, Pressure Needs, Hot Water Supply Setup and Troubleshooting Drips

Kitchen mixer taps blend hot and cold water through one spout, and they only work well if the hot water supply and pressure are set up properly, which is a common problem in Pakistani homes with geysers and rooftop tanks. This page explains monobloc, dual-lever, pull-out and wall mixers, ceramic cartridges, pressure needs, hot water supply setup and troubleshooting drips. For prices see sink mixer prices, for quality see kitchen faucets and for water pressure see water tanks and pumps.

Types of mixer tap

  • Single lever monobloc. One lever sets flow and temperature.
  • Dual-lever mixer. Two handles, one spout.
  • Pull-out mixer. With a spray head.
  • Wall mixer. Fixed to the wall with water points inside it.

How a mixer works

Hot and cold supplies enter a cartridge, which mixes them in the proportion set by the lever. For good results, hot and cold pressures should be similar. Very different pressures cause a sudden hot or cold surge when someone uses another tap.

Pressure needs

Mixers need steady pressure, often at least 0.5 to 1 bar. Rooftop tanks may give weak pressure, and a booster pump can help. Check that both supplies are balanced. Low pressure hot water from a geyser can limit the flow.

Hot water supply setup

Run a hot pipe from the geyser or heater to the left tap point and cold to the right, with isolation valves under the sink. Use braided hoses of the right length, and insulate the hot pipe. Do not connect hot water to a plastic tap not rated for heat. Fixed plumbing should be done by a licensed plumber.

Cartridges

A ceramic disc cartridge, commonly 35 or 40 millimetres, gives smooth control and lasts for years. Replacement is simple: close the valves, remove the lever and nut, pull out the cartridge and fit a matching one. Take the old one to the shop.

Troubleshooting

  • Drips from the spout. Worn cartridge.
  • Leak at the base. Worn O-ring or loose nut.
  • Only cold or hot. Blocked supply or reversed hoses.
  • Weak flow. Clogged aerator or low pressure.

Check the geyser connection

If you use a geyser, check that the mixer is rated for its temperature and pressure, and fit a pressure relief valve as the geyser maker advises. For solar water heaters, ask the installer about back-pressure. A mismatch can damage cartridges.

Before you decide

Check your hot and cold pressure, choose a mixer with a ceramic cartridge and fit isolation valves. A well set up mixer tap gives easy temperature control and years of drip-free use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Taps that blend hot and cold water through one spout, controlled by one or two handles. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

Hoses may be reversed, the hot supply may be blocked or closed, or the geyser may be off. Check valves and connections. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering.
