Rubber Flooring and Gym Mats: Thickness, Types and Where Each Works

Rubber flooring absorbs impact, reduces noise and grips underfoot, which is why gyms, play areas, garages and workshops use it. The word covers rolls, tiles and interlocking mats in very different thicknesses and densities, and the right choice depends on what is dropped, walked or driven on it. This guide explains the types, how to choose thickness for weights, a gym or a play area, how it is fitted, what to expect from the rubber smell and how to look after it. It sits in our flooring range, alongside carpets and rugs.

What this floor is made of

It is made from natural or synthetic rubber, often recycled, pressed into rolls, tiles or mats. It is dense, flexible and slip-resistant, and it absorbs impact and sound. The surface can be plain black, speckled with coloured flecks or fully coloured. It is a utility floor, valued for performance more than looks.

Rubber Flooring and Gym Mats: Frequently Asked Questions

A general fitness area can use a thinner mat, but a free-weights zone needs thicker, denser rubber to absorb drops and protect the slab. The right thickness depends on the weights and the use, so tell the supplier what you will lift and how often.

Rolls have fewer joints and suit large flat areas, while tiles are easier to handle and let you replace one damaged piece. Interlocking mats are the quickest to fit and suit home gyms and rented spaces. Choose by area, budget and how often you may move or change the floor.

New rubber has a noticeable smell that fades with ventilation over days to weeks. Cheaper recycled rubber tends to smell more. Air the room well, unroll the product in a ventilated space before fitting where possible, and ask the supplier about odour for enclosed rooms.

Yes. It is softer than concrete, resists wheels and dropped tools and cuts noise, but oils and solvents can soften some rubber, so check the product's oil resistance. Choose a medium thickness and glue it down if the floor will see heavy wheeled loads.

Sweep and mop with a mild cleaner and avoid solvents, oils and harsh chemicals that can soften or damage the rubber. Wipe spills quickly and keep sharp objects off the surface. Protect it from strong direct sun where possible, which can dry and fade it.

Send the area, the use and the loads involved on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that states the format, thickness and density, so you can compare quotes on the same product and the same scope.
