Kitchen Exhaust Pipe in Pakistan: Duct Pipe Size, Aluminium, PVC and Steel Options, Bends, Length Limits and Outside Caps
A kitchen exhaust pipe carries smoke, steam and grease from a hood or fan to the outside, and the pipe you choose affects airflow, noise and fire safety. The pipe is often an afterthought, yet a wrong size or too many bends can cut a good hood's performance by half. This page explains pipe size, the materials, bends and length limits, the outside cap, indicative rates and fitting tips. See kitchen exhaust options and kitchen exhaust fans.
Pipe size
Use the pipe diameter that the hood or fan outlet needs, commonly 4 inch (100 mm), 6 inch (150 mm) or 8 inch (200 mm). A pipe smaller than the outlet chokes the fan and makes noise. A larger pipe is fine if reduced neatly. Check the outlet size on the model label before buying pipe.

Pipe materials
- Rigid aluminium. Smooth, light and the best choice for performance.
- Flexible aluminium. Easy around corners but rough inside and noisier.
- Galvanised steel. Strong, good for commercial kitchens.
- PVC pipe. Cheap, but not suited to hot, greasy air from a gas stove.

Bends and length
Each 90 degree bend cuts airflow as much as about two metres of straight pipe. Keep the run as short and straight as possible, and use gentle bends. For a normal hood, a run under about 3 metres with one or two bends is good. Longer runs need a stronger fan or a bigger pipe.
Outside cap and slope
Fit a cap with a flap on the outer end so wind and insects do not enter and back-draught is stopped. Slope the pipe very slightly down to the outside so condensation and grease run out instead of back into the hood. Seal the wall hole round the pipe.
Fire safety
Grease in a pipe can catch fire. Use metal pipe for gas cooking, keep it away from wood and curtains, and clean the filters often. Do not run a pipe through a combustible void without protection. Our guide to exhaust hoods lists filters and cleaning.
Noise
Smooth rigid pipe is quieter than flexible pipe. A loose pipe rattles, so clamp it every metre or so. Long flexible runs whistle. For the quietest result, put an inline fan, as in our ventilation fan guide, away from the kitchen.
Fitting and wiring
Seal joints with aluminium tape, not cloth tape, and keep the pipe clear of electrical wiring. Fixed wiring should be done by a licensed electrician. Use a timer switch if you want the fan to run on after cooking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Use the diameter of the hood outlet, commonly 4, 6 or 8 inch. A pipe smaller than the outlet chokes the fan and adds noise. Check the model label before buying the pipe. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
Rigid aluminium gives the best airflow and is easy to fit. Flexible aluminium is easier but noisier. Galvanised steel suits heavy use. PVC is cheap but not suited to hot, greasy air from a gas stove. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.
Keep it short and straight. A run under about 3 metres with one or two gentle bends suits a normal hood. Each 90 degree bend costs airflow like about two metres of straight pipe. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering.
Yes, a cap with a flap stops wind, insects and back-draught. Slope the pipe slightly down to the outside and seal the wall hole round it. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
It can be if grease builds up. Use metal pipe for gas cooking, keep filters clean, keep the pipe away from wood and curtains and have it checked if you cook with a lot of oil. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.
