Single Wooden Door: Sizes, Designs and Where It Fits Best

A single wooden door is the everyday door of the house: one leaf, one frame and one lock, used on bedrooms, studies, stores and many entrances. Because it is so common, small details decide whether it feels solid or cheap: the leaf thickness, the frame fit, the hinges and the finish. This guide covers usual sizes, designs, the rooms that suit it and what to check before you order. For the full picture on timber and cores, see our wooden doors guide.

Usual sizes for a single leaf

Room doors are commonly about 7 ft high and 3 ft wide, with narrower leaves for bathrooms and stores and wider ones for entrances. Always measure the finished opening and confirm the leaf and frame sizes. Our standard door sizes guide lists the usual dimensions.

Single leaf designs

Flush leaves suit modern rooms, panelled leaves suit classic ones, and a grooved leaf adds a simple pattern. A glass inset suits a passage or study. Choose one design for the whole floor so the hallway feels calm, and match hardware finishes across doors.

Leaf thickness and core

A thicker leaf with a solid or block-board core feels heavier and blocks more sound, which suits bedrooms. A thin hollow leaf is light and cheaper but sounds hollow when knocked. Ask for the core type and the thickness in writing.

Frame fit and hinges

The frame, or chokhat, must be plumb and match the wall thickness, and the leaf should have an even gap on all sides. Heavy leaves need three hinges. Read about the door frame before you order, because a poor frame ruins a good leaf.

Care and moisture

Seal all edges, including top and bottom, and keep the bottom gap clear of water. Single wooden doors suit dry rooms, and wet rooms need a waterproof material. If you need a wider opening, see French and double doors.

Single Wooden Door: Frequently Asked Questions

Room doors are commonly around 7 ft high and 3 ft wide, with narrower leaves for bathrooms and wider ones for entrances. Sizes differ by builder and by older houses, so measure your finished opening and confirm the leaf and frame sizes with the supplier before you order.

Room doors are commonly around 35 to 45 mm thick, and entrance doors are often thicker for strength and sound. A thicker leaf with a solid or block-board core feels more substantial. Always confirm the measured thickness, since stated and actual figures can differ.

A flush or lightly grooved leaf in a wood-look or painted finish suits most bedrooms. It is smooth, easy to clean and works with modern and classic furniture. Choose a core that reduces sound, and match the handle finish with the other hardware in the house.

Not always, but the new leaf must fit the existing frame in size, thickness and hinge position, and the frame must be straight and sound. If the old frame is damaged, warped or the wrong size, replacing it with the door usually gives a better result.

Only under cover. Direct sun and rain damage natural wood quickly, so an exposed door needs a weather-rated finish, sealed edges and regular upkeep with fresh coats of sealer. For open balconies, a PVC, uPVC or steel door lasts longer with much less maintenance.

Send the opening size, the room, the finish you like and a photo on WhatsApp. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the leaf, frame, finish and hardware so you can compare it on the same scope with other quotes.
