Sliding Doors in Pakistan: Types, Track Systems and Where They Work
Sliding doors save the swing space of a hinged door, open wide and bring light into a room, which is why they suit balconies, patios, wardrobes and compact apartments. They also depend on a good track, good rollers and good sealing, and a weak system jams, leaks and rattles. This guide explains the types, how the track system works, what to check on sealing and security and where sliding doors are the wrong choice. For one material in depth, see PVC sliding doors.
Types of sliding door
The frame material and the glass decide the look and the weather resistance.
| Type | Strengths | Limits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium and glass | Slim frame, large glass | Needs good thermal and sound seals | Patios, balconies, living rooms |
| uPVC and glass | Weather-sealed, low upkeep | Thicker frames, limited colours | Balconies, bedrooms |
| PVC panel | Waterproof, light | Fewer premium looks | Bathrooms, kitchens, wardrobes |
| Wooden or MDF | Warm look, interior use | Not for wet or exposed areas | Wardrobes, partitions |
Frame options are covered under uPVC doors and glass doors.

How a sliding system works
A sliding door runs on rollers in a track at the bottom, with a guide at the top. The quality of the rollers, the track and the lock decides how smoothly it opens years later. Ask what the rollers are made of and whether they can be replaced. Keep the track clean, because dust and grit are the main cause of jamming.
Sealing, sound and heat
Where a sliding door leaves a gap, it leaks air, dust and sound. Brush or rubber seals along the edges and at the interlock help, and double glazing helps with heat and noise. Check how the door drains water at the bottom track, and that the weep holes are clear.
Security and safety
Use a proper multi-point lock and an anti-lift design so the door cannot be lifted out of its track. Use toughened or laminated glass, and add a safety strip or marker at eye level. For rooms with children, consider a soft-close mechanism to protect fingers.

Where sliding doors work, and where they do not
They shine where there is no swing room: balconies, wardrobes, compact bedrooms and wide patio openings. They are a poorer choice for main entrances that need maximum security and a tight seal. For double-leaf entries that open outwards, see French and double doors.
Planning the opening
Plan the stacking space for the open panel, the track recess in the floor and the header strength above the opening. Read our doors and windows guide to coordinate the sliding door with the rest of the glazing.

Sliding Systems: Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, especially for balconies, patios, wardrobes and compact rooms, because they save swing space and open wide. They need a good track, rollers and seals, and they are less suitable for main entrances that demand maximum security. Choose the frame material to suit the weather and the room.
Aluminium gives slim frames and large glass, uPVC offers weather sealing and low upkeep, and PVC panels suit wet rooms and wardrobes. Wooden or MDF suits dry interior partitions only. Choose by exposure, glass size, budget and how much maintenance you want to do.
Dust, grit and debris in the bottom track are the main cause, followed by worn rollers and a misaligned frame. Clean the track regularly, lubricate the rollers sparingly and check the door is level. If rollers are worn, replace them before the track gets damaged.
They are safe when fitted with toughened or laminated glass, a multi-point lock and an anti-lift design. Add a marker at eye level so the glass is visible, and consider soft-close mechanisms in homes with children. Always ask which type of safety glass is used.
Some do, mainly at the edges and the centre interlock. Good brush or rubber seals, tight tolerances and double glazing reduce draughts, dust and noise. Ask the supplier how the door is sealed and how water drains from the bottom track before you order.
Send the opening size, the room and a photo on WhatsApp, with the frame material you prefer. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists the frame, glass, track, lock and seals so you can compare quotes on the same scope.
