Treads and risers: what each one needs
The tread takes the weight and the wear. Use a matt porcelain with an anti-slip surface, and avoid polished or glossy tile, which turns treacherous in socks or when the stairs are wet from shoes. The riser sees no weight, so it can use any tile you like, including decorative ceramic, as long as the colour and pattern suit the floor around it.
If you want a clean, quiet look, use the same tile for both. For a lively look, use a plain tread and a patterned riser.
Anti-slip and nosing
The front edge of each step, the nosing, takes the most abuse and is where most falls begin. A rounded tile edge, a bullnose tile or a metal, brass or PVC nosing profile protects the edge from chipping and gives the eye a clear line to follow. Some profiles include a rubber insert for grip.
Choose a tile with a rated anti-slip surface. For indoor stairs, a fine matt texture is enough. For outdoors, go for a coarser grip, and ask the seller for the slip rating in writing.

Patterned risers
A patterned riser is the most affordable way to add character to a staircase. Moroccan, Spanish and geometric tiles, or a different pattern on each step, make a feature of a hallway. Keep the tread quiet, so the pattern is the star.
Plan the pattern so it repeats cleanly from step to step. Order a few extra riser tiles, because the pattern will not match if you have to reorder later from a different batch.
Outdoor steps
Outdoor steps need a dense porcelain or exterior-rated tile, a coarse anti-slip surface and a slight slope, about 1 to 2 percent, so water runs off the tread instead of standing. Avoid dark tiles on west-facing steps, which get painfully hot in summer afternoons.
Use a weatherproof polymer-modified adhesive, flexible sealant at the junction with the wall and a bullnose or nosing profile on every step edge.

Sizes and cuts
A standard tread is 10 to 12 inches deep, so a 12x24 inch tile cut to the width of the step works well, and a 12x12 inch tile fits a standard tread with no cutting. Risers are usually 6 to 7 inches high, so cut 12-inch tiles lengthways.
Many makers sell single-piece step tiles, with a rounded nose and a matching riser. They cost more but give a neat finish and fewer joints on the edge.
Colour contrast for safety
For homes with older people or children, make the edge of every step visible. A strip of contrasting colour on the nosing, or a lighter tread against a darker riser, makes it easy to judge each step. Add a light near the stair or a low-level LED strip, since many falls happen at night.

What stair tiles cost
These are typical material rates in Pakistan. Stair labour is higher than floor labour because of the cuts and the effort of working at each step.
| Item | Rate (PKR) |
|---|---|
| Anti-slip floor tile for treads | PKR 100 - 300 |
| Riser tile, plain | PKR 80 - 200 |
| Patterned riser tile, per piece | PKR 150 - 600 |
| Stair nosing, per piece | PKR 300 - 1,500 |
| Fixing labour, per step | PKR 400 - 1,500 |
Fixing tips
Start at the bottom step and work up, fixing each riser first and then the tread. Use full adhesive coverage and press each tile down firmly, since a hollow tile on a step will crack. Do not allow people on the stairs until the adhesive has cured, usually 24 to 48 hours. Leave a small gap at the wall and fill it with sealant.
Frequently Asked Questions
A matt porcelain with a rated anti-slip surface on the tread, and any tile you like on the riser. Avoid polished or glossy tile on treads, which becomes slippery. Fix a rounded nosing or a metal nosing profile to protect the edge.
Yes. Tread tiles should have an anti-slip surface, especially in homes with children or older people, and outdoors where rain makes steps slippery. Choose a fine matt texture indoors and a coarser grip outdoors, and ask for the rating in writing.
Nosing is the edge profile on the front of each step. It protects the tile from chipping and shows the edge clearly. A metal, brass or PVC nosing is strongly recommended, or use bullnose tiles with a rounded edge. It also gives a safety line that the eye can follow in poor light.
A 12x24 inch tile cut to fit works well on a standard 10 to 12 inch tread, and 12x12 inch tiles fit without cutting. Many makers also sell single-piece step tiles with a rounded edge, which give a neat finish.
Yes. Risers carry no weight, so decorative ceramic tile suits them well. Keep the tread plain, order a few extra tiles from the same batch, and plan the pattern so it repeats cleanly from step to step. Fix riser tiles first, then the tread, so the edge lines up cleanly with the nosing.
