Tile polish promises shine, but the right product depends on the tile. Marble and terracotta respond well to sealers and polish, while glazed ceramic and porcelain are already glossy and can be made slippery or streaky by the wrong wax. Polish, sealer and cleaner are different
A cleaner removes dirt. A sealer soaks into porous stone and clay to block stains. A polish adds a surface layer or buffs the surface for shine. People often use polish when what the floor needs is cleaning, and a polish layer on top of dirt just traps it. Clean first, seal if needed, and polish only where it helps.

Ceramic and porcelain
Glazed ceramic and porcelain are already shiny or matt by design, and they do not need polish. Wax or floor polish on them builds a film that makes the floor slippery and collects dirt. A good neutral cleaner and a microfibre mop keep them looking right. Polished porcelain that has gone dull from scratches can be restored by a professional.
Marble, granite and terrazzo

Terracotta and unglazed clay
Unglazed clay needs a penetrating sealer after fixing, and then a wax or topical finish if you want a sheen. Reapply when water stops beading on the surface. Use a mild cleaner, and avoid acid, which damages the sealer and the clay.
What harms tile
Acid cleaners on marble, bleach on coloured grout, abrasive pads on polished surfaces, wax on glazed tile, and too much water on unsealed clay all damage floors. So does ignoring grit: sand underfoot is the main cause of scratches. Mats at doors and daily sweeping do more for shine than any polish.
A routine that keeps the shine
Sweep daily, mop with a neutral cleaner and rinse, and dry the floor. Put mats at every door, since grit scratches and dulls polished surfaces. Wipe spills at once. For marble and terracotta, reseal on schedule and have the floor professionally polished every few years. This routine does more for a floor than any bottle of shine.
Choosing a contractor for machine polishing
Ask for photographs and references from past polishing jobs, and for a test patch in a corner. A good contractor inspects the floor, explains the steps and quotes by area, including filling chips and sealing. Avoid anyone who offers a full restoration in a day or uses a heavy chemical shine without grinding first.
