Room Wall Tiles: Feature Walls, Sizes, Finishes and What They Cost

Room wall tiles are not only for bathrooms and kitchens. A tiled feature wall in a living room, bedroom or entrance gives texture and durability that paint cannot, and it does not mark, peel or fade. This page covers feature wall ideas, sizes, relief and natural-look finishes, mosaic panels, lighting, fixing and rates. Related pages: living room wall tiles design, stone wall tiles and metro tiles.

Feature wall ideas

Choose one wall, the one that you see first, and give it a different finish. A relief tile with side lighting suits a TV wall. Stone-look tile suits a fireplace or an entrance wall. Wood-look planks laid vertically suit a bedroom headboard wall. A mosaic panel suits a niche or a dining wall. Keep the other walls plain.

These are typical rates in Pakistan.

Textured or 3D relief tilePKR 160 - 380
Stone-look or wood-look tilePKR 150 - 350

Sizes

Wall tiles of 12x24 inch, 12x18 inch and 16x32 inch are the common sizes. A tall narrow tile laid vertically adds height, and a wide tile laid horizontally adds width. Large-format tiles give fewer joints, and small sizes suit niches and curved walls. Match the size to the wall, not the other way round.

Relief, stone-look and wood-look

Relief tiles add shadow with light grazing across them. Stone-look gives the weight of natural stone without the cost, and wood-look gives warmth without upkeep. All of these are lighter and easier to maintain than their natural equivalents, and they stay stable in humidity.

Colours and lighting

Pick a colour that picks up one shade from the furniture or the curtains. Light colours open a small room, and darker ones add depth in a large room. Wall lights, concealed LED strips and picture lights bring out the texture, so plan the wiring before the tile goes up.

Fixing and care

Fix on a flat, dry wall with polymer-modified adhesive. Plan sockets and fixings, and cut around them neatly. Seal the top and side edges with a trim. Wipe with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth, and brush dust out of relief grooves. Avoid sprays on textured tile.

Room by room

In a living room, use a relief or stone-look panel behind the TV or sofa. In a bedroom, use wood-look or a soft ribbed tile behind the headboard. In an entrance, use stone-look or a patterned tile that wipes clean. In a dining room, a mosaic or a metallic accent catches evening light. Keep the style consistent through the house, so each feature belongs to the same family.

What to check before buying

  • Size. Suited to the wall.
  • Finish. Relief depth for easy cleaning.
  • Batch. One batch for even colour.
  • Wiring. Planned before tiling.
  • Spares. Extra tiles for corners and cuts.

Frequently Asked Questions

The wall you see first when you enter the room: behind the TV, behind the sofa, or the headboard wall in a bedroom. Keep the other walls plain, and choose a tile colour that picks up a shade from the furniture.

12x24 inch is the most common, laid vertically to add height. Large formats give fewer joints on a wide wall, while small sizes suit niches. Choose by the proportions of the wall. Ask the seller to show a few sizes on a sample board so you can judge the proportions.

Not with a shallow relief. Dust sits in the grooves, so brush or vacuum the wall regularly and wipe with a soft cloth. Avoid sprays and strong cleaners, which leave marks in deep relief. A weekly dry brush is usually all that a feature wall needs.

Yes. A wood-look or stone-look feature tile behind the headboard looks smart and wipes clean. Choose soft colours and plan the sockets and lights before the tile goes up. Choose a matt or satin finish, which reflects less light at night.

Plain wall tiles cost about PKR 100 to 220 per square foot, relief tiles PKR 160 to 380, stone-look or wood-look PKR 150 to 350, and mosaic panels PKR 250 to 450. Fixing labour is PKR 45 to 100. Ask for a written rate that lists each tile, so the total is clear.
