PN ratings
PN stands for nominal pressure in bar. PN10 is thin-walled and for cold water only, PN16 suits cold and warm water and PN20 suits hot and cold water in houses, up to 70 degrees continuously. For geysers and hot lines choose PN20. Thicker walls cost more but last longer.
Heat fusion welding
A fusion machine heats the pipe end and the fitting socket to about 260 degrees, they are pushed together and cool into one piece with no joint to leak. Correct heating time and no twisting give strong joints. Poor welding is the commonest cause of hidden leaks. Plumbing and gas work should be done by licensed tradespeople and pressure tested before it is covered.
Quality checks
Look for printed size, PN rating, maker and standard, a uniform colour and wall thickness, and a smooth inner surface. Cheap pipe uses recycled or filler material, becomes brittle and cracks. Buy from a dealer who gives an invoice and ask for the test certificate.
Hot water and expansion
PPR expands with heat, about 1.5 millimetres per metre for a 10 degree rise, so allow loops or clips that let it move, and insulate hot pipes. Keep pipes away from direct sun, which degrades the plastic.

- Clip every 60 to 100 cm. Closer for hot lines.
- Pressure test. At 1.5 times working pressure for 30 minutes before covering.
