Gas Pipe Guide: GI, Copper and Approved Flexible Gas Hoses for Natural Gas and LPG, Sizes, Threaded Joints, Regulators, Ventilation, Leak Testing, Safety Rules and Indicative Rates in Pakistan

Gas pipe carries natural gas or LPG to stoves, geysers and heaters, and since a leak can cause fire or explosion, the material, joints and testing are safety matters, not just plumbing. Prices run from about PKR 350 per metre for half inch GI pipe to PKR 2,000 for larger pipe. This page covers GI, copper and approved flexible gas hoses for natural gas and LPG, sizes, threaded joints, regulators, ventilation, leak testing, safety rules and indicative rates in Pakistan. For related pages see GI pipes, gas valves and gas geyser prices.

Materials

  • GI pipe. Medium or heavy class steel pipe with threaded joints, the common choice.
  • Copper tube. Used for neat, short runs with proper fittings.
  • Approved flexible hoses. For final connection to appliances only.

Never use plastic water pipe, rubber hose of unknown rating or garden hose for gas.

Sizes

Half inch pipe suits a single stove, three-quarter inch suits a stove and geyser and one inch suits a main feed for a house with several appliances. The fitter should size the pipe from the total gas load and the length of the run.

Joints and fittings

Use threaded fittings with gas-rated thread sealant or tape, not water-rated ones, and fit unions so appliances can be removed. Avoid joints inside walls. Never use makeshift connections or leaky old fittings.

Regulators and valves

Fit a regulator suited to the gas type and a shut-off valve at each appliance and at the entry. See gas valves. Know where the main shut-off is.

Ventilation and appliances

Gas appliances need fresh air and flues, and rooms with gas heaters or geysers must have fixed ventilation. Never block vents. A gas alarm and a carbon monoxide alarm are cheap safeguards.

Leak testing

After any work, test every joint with soapy water, never a flame, and check the meter for movement with all appliances off. If you smell gas, close the main valve, open windows, avoid switches and flames and call the gas company.

Safety rules

Use licensed gas fitters and approved materials, protect pipes from damage and corrosion, paint or wrap outdoor pipes and inspect hoses yearly. Replace old hoses. Plumbing and gas work should be done by licensed tradespeople and pressure tested before it is covered.

What to check before buying

  • Material. GI, copper or approved hose
  • Joints. Gas-rated, tested
  • Valves and regulator. Fitted
  • Ventilation. Fixed and clear

Before you decide

Gas work is a licensed trade. A leak can go unnoticed until it is dangerous, so use a qualified fitter and test thoroughly. Use approved materials, a licensed fitter and test every joint. Gas pipe work is a safety job. Keep a note of the pipe route and valve positions near the meter and teach the family how to close the main valve in an emergency.
