Ball Valve Guide: Brass, PVC and PPR Ball Valves, Full Bore and Reduced Bore, Threaded and Welded Ends, Lever Handles, Uses for Isolation, Sizes, Indicative Rates, Leaks and Pipe Stop Valves in Pakistan

A ball valve shuts off water with a quarter turn of its handle, using a ball with a hole through it, and it is the standard isolation valve for house plumbing because it is quick, reliable and long-lasting. Prices run from about PKR 150 for a small plastic valve to PKR 5,000 for a large brass one. This page covers brass, PVC and PPR ball valves, full bore and reduced bore, threaded and welded ends, lever handles, uses for isolation, sizes, indicative rates, leaks and pipe stop valves. For related pages see NRV valves, PPR pipe fittings and foot valves.

Types and materials

  • Brass ball valve. The best for house use, durable and pressure-rated.
  • PPR ball valve. Fusion-welded into PPR lines.
  • PVC valve. For cold water and irrigation.
  • Stainless steel. For corrosive and hot service.

Indicative rates

These ranges show common retail figures.

ValveIndicative range
PVC valve, 1/2 to 1 inchPKR 150 - 600
PPR valve, 20 to 32 mmPKR 250 - 1,000
Brass valve, 1/2 to 1 inchPKR 350 - 1,500
Brass valve, 2 inchPKR 1,500 - 4,500
Stainless steel valvePKR 1,200 - 8,000

Prices move with brand, model, size and stock. Use these ranges to judge a quote, then compare the exact model and what is included.

Full bore and reduced bore

A full bore valve has a hole as large as the pipe, so it does not restrict flow, and a reduced bore valve is cheaper with some restriction. For pump lines and mains choose full bore.

Ends and handles

Ends may be threaded, welded, flanged or push-fit. Choose to match the pipe system. Lever handles show the position at a glance, parallel with the pipe means open. Butterfly handles suit small valves.

Where to use it

Use valves to isolate a tank, a pump, a geyser, each bathroom and each tap group so repairs can be done without shutting the whole house. Label the valves. Do not use them to throttle flow, since partial opening wears the seats.

Leaks and failures

A leak from the stem means a worn stem seal, which can often be tightened, and a valve that does not close fully means worn seats or scale. Cheap valves with thin balls and seals fail quickly. Operate valves occasionally so they do not seize. Plumbing and gas work should be done by licensed tradespeople and pressure tested before it is covered.

What to check before buying

  • Body. Brass for most uses
  • Bore. Full bore for mains
  • Ends. Match the pipe
  • Pressure rating. Printed

Before you decide

Choose brass, full bore valves for key lines, label them and work them now and then. A set of good valves makes every repair simpler. Pipe stop valves for fixtures are small valves, and the same buying checks apply when you choose one.

Frequently Asked Questions

A valve that opens or shuts with a quarter turn using a ball with a hole. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.

As indicative ranges, a PVC one is about PKR 150 to 600 and a brass one about PKR 350 to 1,500 for small sizes. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering.

Full bore for pumps and mains. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise.

Send the quantity, the size or rating and a photo of the space. We reply with a written rate that names the model and the warranty, and lists what is and is not included, so the comparison with other sellers is fair.
