Built-In Hob Planning: Cut-Out Sizes, Counter Strength and Thickness, Clearances, Gas and Electric Connections, Sealing, Ventilation and Fitting Steps for Kitchens
A built-in hob sits in a cut-out in the counter, and planning the cut-out, the counter strength, the clearances and the connections before the slab is cut avoids costly mistakes. This page covers cut-out sizes, counter strength and thickness, clearances, gas and electric connections, sealing, ventilation and fitting steps. For choosing a hob see hob stoves, for prices see gas hob price and electric hobs, and for slabs see kitchen slabs.
Get the model first
Buy or choose the hob before the counter is cut, and give the exact model to the mason. Each hob has its own cut-out size, found in the manual or on the template. Cutting from a guess leads to gaps or a hob that does not fit.

Typical cut-out sizes
These typical sizes are a guide only. Always use the maker's template.
| Item | Typical value |
|---|---|
| 60 cm hob, 2 to 3 burners | About 560 x 490 mm cut-out |
| 75 cm hob, 4 burners | About 700 x 490 mm cut-out |
| 90 cm hob, 5 burners | About 860 x 500 mm cut-out |
| Cabinet width needed | At least the hob width, usually 60 to 90 cm |
| Counter thickness | 18 - 30 mm (stone) or 38 mm (board) |
| Corner radius | About 5 - 10 mm |
Prices move with brand, model, size and stock. Use these ranges to judge a quote, then compare the exact model and what is included.
Counter strength and joints
Stone and solid surface counters can crack at sharp cut-out corners, so use rounded corners, keep joints away from the cut-out, and support the slab with plywood or crossbars under it. Do not cut a hob opening at a joint.

Clearances
Leave the maker's clearance to walls and cabinets, typically 5 to 15 centimetres at the sides and 65 to 75 centimetres to a hood above. Keep flammable items away. See kitchen hood size.
Gas and electric connections
Gas hobs need a gas point with an isolation valve within reach and a proper hose. Electric and induction hobs need a dedicated circuit with a suitable breaker and cable. Gas connections and hose changes should be done by a licensed gas fitter, and every joint should be checked with soapy water, never a flame. See breaker prices.
Fitting steps
- Check the cut-out. Dry fit the hob.
- Apply the seal. The gasket or silicone.
- Lower the hob. Centre and level it.
- Fix the clips. From below.
- Connect and test. Gas with soapy water, electric with a tester.
Ventilation and heat
Leave air space under electric and induction hobs as the maker says, and avoid putting a drawer directly below without a heat shield. A strong hood is essential, see electric hoods.
Cost of fitting
Typical charges are about PKR 1,500 to 5,000 for the cut-out, PKR 1,500 to 5,000 for a hose and regulator and PKR 1,500 to 4,000 for fitting, with electrical work extra. Ask for these in the quote, and do not allow the hob to be fitted until the counter is fully fixed and sealed.
Before you decide
Give the exact model to the mason, check the template against the hob and plan connections before the slab is cut. A neat cut-out and a sealed edge keep the counter looking good, and the hob safe, for many years.
Frequently Asked Questions
Use the template or dimensions in the maker's manual. Give the exact model to the mason before cutting. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay.
Away from the cut-out, since stone can crack at cut-out corners. Use rounded corners and support the slab. Check the warranty terms and who honours them before you pay. Measure carefully and confirm sizes with the seller before ordering. Rates and stock change, so confirm the current position before you commit.

Roughly PKR 1,500 to 5,000 each for the cut-out and for a hose and regulator, plus fitting and electrical work. If you are unsure, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
Send the quantity, the size or rating and a photo of the space. We reply with a written rate that names the model and the warranty, and lists what is and is not included, so the comparison with other sellers is fair.
