Velvet Curtains: Types and Weights, Lining, Colours, Blackout Use, Rods, Indicative Prices and Care
Velvet curtains are popular in Pakistani bedrooms and lounges because they hang in rich folds, block light well and keep rooms warmer in winter. They are heavy, so the rod, the brackets and the lining matter, and they need regular dusting and careful washing. This guide covers types, weights, lining, colours, hardware, indicative prices and care. For other fabrics, see curtain fabrics.
Types of velvet
Choose by weight and finish.
| Type | Look | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Plain velvet | Even, rich colour | Shows pile direction |
| Malai velvet | Soft, fine pile | Popular ready-made |
| Textured velvet | Pattern in the pile | Hides marks |
| Velvet with blackout lining | Heavy, dark rooms | Best for sleep |

Weight, lining and drape
Heavier velvet drapes better and blocks more light, but needs stronger hardware. Add blackout lining for bedrooms. Check that the lining is stitched, not glued.
Colours
Deep greens, blues, burgundy and charcoal look rich, and soft neutrals look calm. See curtain colours and combinations and blue curtains.
Hardware
Use a strong rod with a centre support or a heavy-duty track. See curtain rods and tracks.
Bedroom and lounge use
See bedroom curtain design and living room curtain design. Pair with a sheer layer for daytime light.

Care
Dust with a soft brush or a vacuum on a low setting, dry-clean heavy lined velvet and avoid pressing the pile flat. Keep away from strong sun to prevent fading, and check the label before any wash. Hang the curtains to air on a dry day, and brush gently in the direction of the pile to keep the surface even and soft. Store spare panels loosely rolled, not folded, so the pile does not crush.
How we quote
Send the room size, a sketch or photo and the finish you like. We confirm what we can supply and reply with a written rate that lists every item. Before you order, confirm the exact size or model, ask for the specification and warranty in writing, and compare totals including fitting and delivery rather than the item price alone. To get a close first estimate, clear the area, mark sockets, switches and pipe positions, note the ceiling height and photograph the space from two corners.
