Design styles
Geometric mosaics, with hexagons, squares and diamonds, suit modern kitchens and bathrooms. Ombre mosaics blend one colour from light to dark and make a calm focal point. Floral and Moroccan designs bring a traditional, richly patterned look. Picture mosaics, made to order, can show a landscape, a calligraphy panel or a logo.
Small repeat patterns give a quiet texture, while large patterns need a big wall to breathe.
Materials
Ceramic mosaics are affordable, durable and available in matt and gloss. Glass mosaics sparkle and reflect light, which makes small, dark spaces brighter, but they need a white adhesive bed and careful fixing. Stone mosaics, in marble, slate or travertine, have a natural texture but need sealing. Metal accents add a modern edge.
Most mosaics come on 12x12 inch mesh sheets that are fixed whole, which is far faster than setting each tiny piece.

Kitchens, bathrooms and pools
In a kitchen, a mosaic splashback behind the hob is easy to wipe and adds detail between worktop and cabinets. In a bathroom, it suits the wall behind the basin, a niche or a feature strip. In swimming pools, glass and ceramic mosaics are the standard because they resist water and chemicals.
Choose a grout colour that does not show stains, and use epoxy grout in wet areas and behind the hob, where cement grout discolours.
Feature walls and niches
Limit a mosaic to one wall, a niche or a band at eye level, so it stays special. A shower niche lined with a contrasting mosaic costs very little but looks expensive. Behind a freestanding bath or a TV wall, a mosaic panel frames the main item in the room.

Colour planning
Pick the mosaic first, then pull one colour from it for the paint or the plain tile around it. Soft blues and greens calm a bathroom, while gold and black feel rich in a lounge. Glass colours look deeper when the adhesive underneath is white, and darker under grey adhesive, so confirm the adhesive colour with the fitter.
What mosaics cost
These are typical material rates in Pakistan. Mosaic fixing takes longer than normal tile, so labour is higher.
| Item | Rate |
|---|---|
| Ceramic mosaic sheet, per sq ft | PKR 250 - 600 |
| Glass mosaic sheet, per sq ft | PKR 350 - 1,200 |
| Stone mosaic sheet, per sq ft | PKR 400 - 1,500 |
| Custom picture mosaic, per sq ft | Quoted per design |
| Fixing labour, per sq ft | PKR 80 - 200 |

Mistakes to avoid
Grey adhesive under glass mosaic, wide joints between sheets that break the pattern, and cement grout in a shower that stains within months are the three most common errors. Also avoid very small mosaics on an uneven wall, where every ripple shows. Fix the wall first, then the mosaic, and choose epoxy grout wherever water or grease is present.
Fixing tips
Start with a flat, dry wall and use a white polymer adhesive for glass. Press each sheet firmly and leave consistent joints between sheets, so the pattern runs unbroken. Remove excess adhesive from the joints before it sets, then grout with a colour that suits the mosaic. Wipe the surface carefully, because glass scratches if grit is dragged across it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Glass and ceramic mosaics are the usual choices, since they resist water and are easy to clean. Use epoxy grout in wet areas to avoid stains. Stone mosaics look natural but need sealing and extra care. Choose small sheets for curved niches, since they bend around corners more easily than large ones.
Yes. It is a popular choice behind the hob and sink. Use a grout that hides stains, or epoxy grout, and wipe with a neutral cleaner. Small joints collect grease, so clean them regularly with a soft brush. Keep the mosaic to the area behind the hob and sink if you want to keep the cleaning easy.
Glass is translucent, so the adhesive colour shows through and changes the tile. White adhesive keeps the colours true and bright, while grey adhesive makes them look darker and duller. Ask the fitter to use white. Mention this to the fitter before work starts, because grey adhesive is the default on many sites.
Pick a grout close to the main tile colour for a subtle look, or a contrast for a graphic effect. Light grey is safest in wet areas. Epoxy grout resists staining and mould better than cement grout. Ask for a small grout sample card, and test it on a spare piece before grouting the whole wall.
They are easier than they look, since most come on mesh sheets that are fixed whole. They need a flat wall, a suitable adhesive and neat joints between sheets. A skilled fitter makes the difference, so ask to see past work.
