Tools and what to buy
You need a screwdriver set, a tape measure, a pencil, a chisel for a tight recess, a drill for new holes and the new lock set with its fixings. Buy a set that matches the old one in type, size and finish. Photograph the old lock before you remove it, so you can compare.
Step 1: Identify the lock type
Common types are mortise sets, cylinder and rim locks and handle sets. Look at the door edge: a long plate with a latch and a key hole usually means a mortise lock. See door lock types and design.

Step 2: Measure
Measure the door thickness, the backset from the door edge to the centre of the handle spindle, the lock body height and width, the distance between handle and key hole and the face plate size. Take the old lock to the supplier, or send the measurements and photos on WhatsApp.
Step 3: Remove the old lock
Unscrew the handle and rose, remove the face plate screws and pull out the lock body, using a screwdriver to ease it out if it is tight. Keep the door supported. Unscrew the strike plate on the frame. Check the recess for damage.
Step 4: Fit the new lock
Slide the new lock body into the recess, fit the face plate, insert the spindle and handles, fix the screws and align the strike plate on the frame. Fit the cylinder and keys. If the recess is a little loose, pack it with a wood filler or a thin strip rather than forcing the lock.

Step 5: Test
Open and close the door with the lock locked and unlocked. Check that the latch clicks, the deadbolt throws fully into the frame and the handle returns. Test the keys several times. Leave the door open while testing, so that you cannot lock yourself out. Keep the old lock and keys for a few days in case you need to compare a measurement, then dispose of them safely. Give the new keys only to people who need them, and write down which key opens which door.
Common problems and fixes
- Latch does not catch: move the strike plate or chisel the recess.
- Key is stiff: check alignment and lubricate lightly.
- Handle droops: tighten the screws or replace the spring.
- Door sags: check the hinges. See door hinges.
