Why fan size matters
A fan cools by moving air over your skin, so the blade span and the speed decide how far the breeze reaches. A fan that is too small for the room leaves still air in the corners, and a fan that is too large in a small room feels like a gale and uses more power. Choose the size by the floor area of the room and the ceiling height, and keep the fan clear of walls and furniture.
Fan size by room
As a general guide, the blade span grows with the floor area. In Pakistan, 56 inch fans are the standard for most rooms, and 48 inch fans suit small rooms.

Wattage: AC and inverter fans
A conventional AC ceiling fan of 56 inches typically uses about 70 to 80 W at full speed. An AC/DC inverter fan of the same size uses about 25 to 35 W. The wattage is printed on the box, and you should compare it at the same speed and size. See DC inverter ceiling fans.
Running cost example
A conventional fan at 75 W for 12 hours a day uses about 0.9 kWh a day, which is about 27 kWh a month. An inverter fan at 30 W for the same time uses about 0.36 kWh a day, or about 11 kWh a month. At PKR 40 per unit, that is about PKR 1,080 against about PKR 430 a month, a difference of about PKR 650 per fan per month. With five fans, the saving can be PKR 3,000 a month or more, so the higher price of inverter fans is repaid within a few years where fans run most of the day. Your actual tariff and hours will change the figure.
Mounting height and spacing
Hang the fan at least 7 feet above the floor and ideally 8 to 9 feet, with the blades about 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling. Keep the blade tips at least about 18 inches from walls. In a room with a low ceiling, choose a low-profile fan without a down rod. In a high ceiling, use a down rod so that the fan is at a working height.

Fans under false ceilings
If the room has a false ceiling, the fan hook must go to the slab and the fan must clear the ceiling edge and any cove lights. Plan the fan point before the false ceiling is built. See false ceilings and lighting.
Choosing the right fan
- Measure the room and pick the blade span from the table.
- Choose the motor type: inverter for power saving and solar or backup.
- Compare wattage at the same size and speed.
- Check copper winding and the warranty.
- Plan the fixing: a rated hook and a licensed electrician.
For indicative prices, see ceiling fan price in Pakistan.
Common mistakes
- Choosing by looks alone, without checking the wattage.
- A fan too close to the wall or a beam.
- A weak hook that is not rated for the fan.
- Mixing a regulator with an inverter fan that has its own remote.

Yes. Two 56 inch fans spread the air better than one in a very large hall. If in doubt, send a photo and the measurements and we will advise. Ask for the specification in writing so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
